Just tried out and first edit worked - made a space more to each (e.g. "- 0" became "- 0" -> 2 spaces between, instead of 1 space) and it worked, could you check, if that works for you ? Hi. You've posted a lot about the extensions being used at Wikieducator. I've been through the list there and had a closer look. There are all sorts of dimensions to what Wikieducator is doing there.

1. Many of their media extensions are beta status, which means they don't respect their server and database as much as the Wikimedia Foundation does. When an extension gets approved for Wikimedia, it really goes through quality control! Using extensions which are beta status (and likely to remain so) is a short-term attention-grabbing strategy and would not be advisable on a project with a far higher number of editors and therefore a greater range of unpredictables.
2. I posted elsewhere the link to the http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Video_policy . Even if the extensions were upgraded to the required quality, a lot of the issues in the video policy still apply. Wikieducator doesn't have a lot of users or editors, which means it can afford to take bigger risks with media. If Wikieducator was to scale up to anything like some of the Wikimedia Foundation projects, they might well have to go back on some of these things and deactivate or delete media. Again, I suspect a short-term strategy here without the ability to deliver in the long term or in larger scales.
3. There's also a ideological curiosity here. The Wikieducator in-crowd are pretty fanatical when it comes to definitions of "free" in online education, so one wonders why they are embracing formats which are (to my knowledge) at odds with this, such as MP3 and flash. I'm all for these formats myself, but to find them embracing it is politically strange.
4. I see that the collaborative video extension seems to require activation codes to work, supplied by "Kaltura Inc" - I wonder if this is commercial and not open source? They appear to post stuff on sourceforge - so why are they providing these activation codes? Weird. No doubt there is a plausible explanation.
5. Ditto the PDF generation utility. Perhaps they are experimenting with a closed source commercial programme in advance of this programme being perhaps sold (?) to the Wikimedia Foundation (well, I'm speculating there, but there are some weird issues about these apparent commercial tie-ins and I was wondering what on earth the relation between PediaPress GmbH and the Wikimedia Foundation is, and why on earth the Wikimedia Foundation can't use its own test servers or allow a small project like Wikibooks to do the experimentation instead).

My feeling is that even if they're offering some eye-catching stuff right now, there's no reasonable certainty of advanced media content uploaded there actually working in the long term, and it wouldn't transfer to other wikis ("open"?), and it might inadvertantly assist odd goings on in the world of Mediawiki development. I'd much prefer to go through the honest front door with media extensions, which means developing an extension on Mediawiki.org and then getting the Wikimedia devs to activate it here. I'm still waiting for them to activate my (relatively humble) subpage extension. I'm happy to share my experiences with you, though, and help if I can. --McCormack 13:07, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

• Hi again. I had a look at your ZIP file. What immediately strikes me is the large number of images, which would make any simple export into MediaWiki difficult (in my opinion). The second problem is that some of your page titles duplicate page titles which already exist here, so titles would have to be manually adjusted. You'd honestly probably be best off with a semi-automated import. In other words, put your HTML files into a word processor (or wikificator) and do some search/replace commands to wikify them, and then really it's down to pasting in text and uploading images. Have you found http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikificator or http://www.uni-bonn.de/~manfear/html2wiki-tables.php yet? hey Jtneill, I am currently studying Philosophy and Physics at sydney University. I am interested in Philosophy of Mind more spercifically the attempt to characterise consciousness scientifically. Unfortunately, I can't go the Tucson conference in Arizona on exactly this issue which is on now because I am trapped in Sydney. Right now i am hoping to get ArsDigita Universities' complete Computer Science course up on Wikiversity. It is an intensive course that does only one subject a month. It was set up by disenting MIT lecturers who wanted to offer free education. It is meant to be the equivalent to the entire MIT undergraduate course on Computer Science, except condensed to a year. Entry was allowed only to those who had previously completed a Bachelors degree. Since no subjects are taught simultaneously, everyone in the course was in the same boat. I think it is most suitable to this self learning style on wikiversity. Now, why would someone who is studying Philosophy of Mind want to do this? Well Academically: problems with computational theory and crop up all the time in studies of Consciousness (turing + Godel's incompleteness theorem) etc etc. Another reason is, that as it stands online at ArsUni.org it is a complete course with no course materials left out. A problem I am facing is trying to get the video to a size viewable on a computer with bandwith. This is the ideal course for someone wanting to studying computer science who cannot go to a university and hope it gets used in places where the internet is crappy.--Daniel Jones 13:06, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

Hi James. Thanks for your message about the mission statement. The mission is a mystery to me. There are several versions of what the Wikimedia Foundation ordained, and it took me quite a while to work out which was the current version. And then it's not clear to me which words on that page are mere interpretation and commentary, and what the actual words of the proscribed mission are. For example, is it just the section marked "Mission", or is the "Scope" section or the rest also official in any way? Cormaggio is the one who ought to know. Thanks for your work on this - I really appreciate fresh eyes on something that's been developing over a long time for me. :-) I would say that the whole Wikiversity:Wikiversity project proposal document is "official", but that it still reflects a point in time, which was the culmination of a huge amount of discussion as well as a qualified rejection by the board of a previous proposal. I have already edited Wikiversity:Mission/Current to better reflect what I see as the general mission of Wikiversity - I've taken out the bit about coordinating with other WMF projects, because I don't think it's necessary to state explicitly, though perhaps others would disagree with me. My motivation here is to keep the mission statement as simple as possible in order to allow people to fill it with meaning and purpose. I would see the approved proposal as a starting point for building a project, rather than something we need to follow 'to the letter'. However, it is always useful for reference and guidance, and there are certain things that we absolutely must stick to: building learning resources, activities and communities, while not unnecessarily duplicating other WMF projects. RE: this edit. For pages that are imported it is best to move the page rather than cut and paste. One of the reasons for using import (or move) is to preserve the edit history, but the cut and paste looses attribution of authorship. For such a short stub page it is probably not a big deal, but something to be aware of. Also, the imported page might be linked to from wikibooks, and someone there might go following a link to find it here. It is probably not a big deal for this import. In other cases the original on WB was deleted, and that deletion discussion linked to the new location here. You could put a link on the talk page of each lesson that uses the material to the original copy on WB. "dynamic IP allocation" - not something to worry too much about on Wikiversity, until we have millions of edits per day. Speaking as one of the blind, there are probably two issues which affect classes with naughty pupils. One is that if one pupil in the class gets blocked, even for a brief time, a lot of the others get blocked too because they're using the same IP. That's the bigger problem for WV to watch out for - i.e. if it's clear a class is all editing at the same time, try to deal with vandalism by a means other than a block. The second problem is the dynamic IP thing, where a block that lasts a long time theoretically affects someone entirely unrelated (not even in the same institution). As regards the second point, if a vandal has been vandalising from the same IP over a longer period of time, then it probably isn't dynamic, so an infinite block shouldn't be such a problem. Hello, I have been thinking deeply about conciousness and the scienctific nature of atoms. I was thinking, in the extremely small spaces between atoms where no activity is present, is it possible that conciousness could lie here? Or is everything conciousness, the birds, trees, is everything in this physical world conciousness? And also what is consiousness, is it the essence of God? Is it what binds this universe together?

Yes - good question that one. Always wondered myself. The best thing would be to go onto IRC channel #wikimedia-tech and ask. I've found that people on that channel can be a little sleepy, so keep asking. Just a few comments about your deletion here. First, always check the "what links here" link before you delete, and correct all the in-bound links. "What links here" can also give clues about whether the edit was in good faith. In general, good faith edits shouldn't be deleted unless the sole author has requested it for a good reason. A good faith edit that is in the wrong place should be moved rather than deleted, or copied somewhere sensible and the original then deleted. If you don't know where to put it, then a subpage of the author's talk page is good. Hope this helps! Your huge quantity of edits are much appreciated. --McCormack 16:36, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

A couple more comments while my brain is slightly more functional than it was yesterday. The above comment really applies to speedy deletions. When an edit appears to be good faith, but falls foul of some other criterion, then there are quite a number of other solutions available - e.g. tagging the page in some way, proposing a vote for deletion, or getting down to rewriting the resource. A speedy delete of a good faith edit might still come into consideration if it is nevertheless a violation of some policy or other and the policy requires speedy deletion of violations. A good way of getting a feel for what should and should not be deleted is to examine the deletion log and see what others have been deleting. --McCormack 11:34, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

Just a small tip. When you create a great template after having a great idea, make sure both you and everyone else can find out about it in the long term (documentation, help page, etc). • I had a look at your experiments. I agree with the removal of the words "Wikiversity" and putting the miniature links on one line, and I've transferred this to the current main page. On the issue of whether or not to force open the first category: (1) Many people won't realize the +-signs open up further levels, so doing one as an example will help them use the tree; (2) The contents of the first category (i.e. educational level) are the most critical of all, particularly when it comes to correcting 18 months of skewed self-presentation, and the order of items here (i.e. from youngest to oldest) is very deliberate. --McCormack 09:52, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

Hi James and thanks for your message. You may want to edit a bit more on that page - one of your links was broken. On the 2-column issue, the pros and cons need thinking through carefully. Target audience: kids, or their parents/educators? (I think, with this portal, very much the latter). Consistency with other portals? Technical considerations - i.e. column #3 is a transcluded template which is the same for all portals and even the main page, so which column would you get rid of? --McCormack 05:16, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

Another idea: if you are keen to have a kiddy-friendly portal (aimed at 4-5 year-olds), then fork. I think that in the first instance it will be parents who help their pre-schoolers around WV or who look for materials here to print out, so the main portal should be parent-orientated. But one could create a sub-portal (e.g. Portal:Pre-school Education/Kids Only) and point out to parents that this exists (or put a big chunky link at the top of the page). What sort of page might you think would be appropriate for the Topic and School namespaces with respects to psychology? • My own guess is that the "right" way to go about this is a "bottom up" rather than a "top down" approach. In other words, use the psychology areas as an experiment in trying to find out how namespaces are or are not useful for organising a field of knowledge. Yes, that is a valid reason. But you should then also keep in mind that the page might be available on different servers, e.g. google. In reply to your msg (give me a clue as to how not to do this so public, but open is fine by me)... Let me explain where I am coming from. I teach various student types but on a Wed morning a group of unqualified ones. Just now they enjoyed quizzes - the first of style arch/quiz5 to which they write answers down, one arch/quiz4 about the clothes of colleague, another on arch/quiz6 music (I recorded some intros and they uploaded them locally). I deleted uncat before as I felt that the image might distract/possibly disturb them. I registered early on a Wikiveristy page that I was interested in this Special needs area but have not returned since due to workload. Anyway I hope this helps and am open to input. Finally so far my use of Wikiversity has been selfish as I find my way round; Mr Elliott (film man) would be good to emulate but ....

In response to your comment on my wikipedia talkpage, the reason why I placed that template on my former dust rider account was mainly due to the fact that a number of edits which I've made with that account was transferred to Terra when I had the name change however a number of edits and comments which I made on talkpages or on Anonymous talkpages still had the old Dust Rider name - and I was well established with that username and if I hadn't placed that template on that account to alert user's that my username had indeed changed someone else could have created it and then got confused as to why user's where already talking to that person when in fact they were new - if there was a template other than that particular template to use then I would have used a different one. I was just about to begin editing this lesson before I saw you had added in some information. I understand this may be of some interest to the Psychology department so my plan has changed. I was going to discuss the history of it, then go into the stages of change (Prochaska and DiClemente), then the process of doctor-patient motivational interviewing and finish with some examples that the reader could use to practice with classmates. I am now wondering if Psychologists also use this technique. If so, I will stick to the original plan and we can share the content and I can change doctor to health professional. If not, I will split it up into knowledge (history and stages of change) and skills (the interviewing technique and the examples) and we could then share the knowledge page. Based on your request on the sandbox server for RandomInclude and the potential need for other sorts of random stuff, I've added a random extension that I wrote myself rather quickly. Allows the inclusion of random text, a random page, a random image, or hopefully anything else a person might think of. Actually I read it and had an aggressive feeling :-( Don't misunderstand please - this is just a personal comment, not on the topic itself: I just personally see the web 2.0 as a hype thing. To my mind came thoughts like: why not lecture 2.1 or 3.0 (be one version in advance :-)) or even 0.5 (back to the roots) ? Most important for a lecture is in my view the mind of the involved people (the person doing the lecture and the persons in the lecture who provide feedback - even a yawn is feedback). Hi again. I had a look at Social psychology (psychology) out of curiosity - but also thinking about one of my favourite current hobbies called Wikiversity:Featured. My first impression on viewing this page is "not much" - because there isn't much to see when the boxes are collapsed. I opened them up one by one, and was more impressed each time more content came into view. This was my knee-jerk reaction on first viewing. Thinking about the categorisation... Currently the template reckons the "rootname" of the page is the best thing to categorise it under, and advises that the category for the rootname should be categorised under "lectures". Wondered if you had any ideas about this one? Recently I've been playing with the distinction "tame versus wild" to describe different kinds of community which evolve at Wikiversity. Perhaps you've read some of the stuff? Anyway, I still like the term "wild", but I find the word "tame", as the opposite, unsatisfactory and almost derogatory. I'm looking for an alternative, but having difficulty. It has to be something which forms a decent collocation with "audience" and "community", as in "wild audience/wild community" but meaning the opposite. See Wikiversity:tame audience. Ah I see... I didn't know what the "case studies" category was used for otherwise. The DPL works like this... so if all the content pages are kept in the main category, they can be tracked via a community watchlist. Maybe just replace Category:Case studies with Category:Ethical Management of the English Language Wikipedia/Case Studies, but not at the same time removing Category:Ethical Management of the English Language Wikipedia. Wikipedia, commons, and other "non-subpaged/non-DPL" projects tend to use categories in a tree (so redundancy is bad), but there are other ways to use them (the Bloom Clock, for example, uses them as primary content). In general the way categories work is going to be different for each subproject within Wikiversity. A year or two ago I did some work on "local manuals of style" on Wikibooks: see b:WB:LMOS for examples (might be worth developing further here). --SB_Johnny ^talk 09:01, 31 August 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for your frank, positve and very constructive feedback on my e-portfolio. Thanks also for the internal Wiki links – I’m on the lookout for some new techniques. I am also interested in your idea of a student textbook!

Well, my rationalisation is my need for formative feedback. This is especially so for me in this subject where we are experimenting with different ways of working and all items of assessment are in the final weeks of the course. You don’t want to get to the end and find you’re on the wrong track! I was initially hesitant about this online approach but now find (as you can see) I’m a bit addicted to it! It has really helped me to ‘tease out’ concepts I would normally have glossed over (at this stage in the semester anyway). I have also done a lot of thinking about content, textbooks, contexts, social psychology, psychology and how these are wrapped up in a university degree (and I have changed some of my attitudes – maybe not behaviours). So you have certainly facilitated my engagement in the subject and more. I also think that your dedication to our learning, different approach to teaching and the incredible effort you put into these subjects should be acknowledged – Congratulations. No - not even a water flea in it for you, mate. Just create category class notes and add it to "resources by type". Nothing clever. You could also make "class notes" a subcategory of things like "lectures" or "lessons" or "courses". Hi James

For my essay topic, I was going to do what you suggested “what is sex role theory and what has been found from sex role research” could I do the same question just

a) what is gender role theory and what has been found from gender role research, or to be even more specific b) what is gender role theory and what has been found from gender role research concerning intimate relationship quality between men and women

Just when I looked a bit more into sex role theory as opposed to gender I found the research went off into cog psych and biology a bit and the text has even less on sex roles than it does gender. Also I already have heaps of articles on gender and relationships that I would really like to use.

So in discussing gender role theory thought I could look at the major theories that account for gender roles eg. gender schema theory, evolutionary theory, social role theory. Then on the research bit just discuss the major finding and how they relate back to the theories.

Is this okay?? any feedback would be great.

Hello. I tried porting the templates on Help:Pretty_Boxes but the main template - b:Template:IconBoxLeft does not work properly. I can see round cornered boxes with themes, but not the "pretty boxes". Can you tell me what I should such that the templates can be used on wikibooks as well?
