Re: Linear correlation/Introductory quiz

Hello James, I have added here also links to WP. Now I am not sure, if this would be contra productive to what you had in mind ? On the other hand, people can always go to WP - it is just more comfortable for them now. ----Erkan Yilmaz uses the Wikiversity:Chat (try) 17:28, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

Just tried out and first edit worked - made a space more to each (e.g. "- 0" became "- 0" -> 2 spaces between, instead of 1 space) and it worked, could you check, if that works for you ? But don't ask me now why this was :-) ----Erkan Yilmaz uses the Wikiversity:Chat (try) 00:10, 20 March 2008 (UTC)
Was just a wild guess. Plan B would have been to replace the zero with an O (as in Omaha) which wouldlook not so nice, but well... Fine that it works now. ----Erkan Yilmaz uses the Wikiversity:Chat (try) 00:16, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

Outdoor education...

Aside from the wikibooks stuff, have you seen the Bloom Clock? One of the uses for it is for teachers to easily find the names of plants for when they're taking children out for a walk :). --SB_Johnny | talk 12:23, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

Extensions

Hi. You've posted a lot about the extensions being used at Wikieducator. I've been through the list there and had a closer look. There are all sorts of dimensions to what Wikieducator is doing there.

  1. Many of their media extensions are beta status, which means they don't respect their server and database as much as the Wikimedia Foundation does. When an extension gets approved for Wikimedia, it really goes through quality control! Using extensions which are beta status (and likely to remain so) is a short-term attention-grabbing strategy and would not be advisable on a project with a far higher number of editors and therefore a greater range of unpredictables.
  2. I posted elsewhere the link to the http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Video_policy . Even if the extensions were upgraded to the required quality, a lot of the issues in the video policy still apply. Wikieducator doesn't have a lot of users or editors, which means it can afford to take bigger risks with media. If Wikieducator was to scale up to anything like some of the Wikimedia Foundation projects, they might well have to go back on some of these things and deactivate or delete media. Again, I suspect a short-term strategy here without the ability to deliver in the long term or in larger scales.
  3. There's also a ideological curiosity here. The Wikieducator in-crowd are pretty fanatical when it comes to definitions of "free" in online education, so one wonders why they are embracing formats which are (to my knowledge) at odds with this, such as MP3 and flash. I'm all for these formats myself, but to find them embracing it is politically strange.
  4. I see that the collaborative video extension seems to require activation codes to work, supplied by "Kaltura Inc" - I wonder if this is commercial and not open source? They appear to post stuff on sourceforge - so why are they providing these activation codes? Weird. No doubt there is a plausible explanation.
  5. Ditto the PDF generation utility. Perhaps they are experimenting with a closed source commercial programme in advance of this programme being perhaps sold (?) to the Wikimedia Foundation (well, I'm speculating there, but there are some weird issues about these apparent commercial tie-ins and I was wondering what on earth the relation between PediaPress GmbH and the Wikimedia Foundation is, and why on earth the Wikimedia Foundation can't use its own test servers or allow a small project like Wikibooks to do the experimentation instead).

My feeling is that even if they're offering some eye-catching stuff right now, there's no reasonable certainty of advanced media content uploaded there actually working in the long term, and it wouldn't transfer to other wikis ("open"?), and it might inadvertantly assist odd goings on in the world of Mediawiki development. I'd much prefer to go through the honest front door with media extensions, which means developing an extension on Mediawiki.org and then getting the Wikimedia devs to activate it here. I'm still waiting for them to activate my (relatively humble) subpage extension. I'm happy to share my experiences with you, though, and help if I can. --McCormack 13:07, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

Importing your content

Hi Jtneill. Thanks for your message over on my talk page. I had a go at the URL you sent to the list, but the export facility completely failed for me, so I have no idea of the formats and sizes involved. I might be able to help you in some way, and I'd at least like to have a look at the files. Is there anyway you can export these - perhaps to a set of local files, which you then zip up and pass around for the rest of us to examine? --McCormack 05:20, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

  • Hi again. I had a look at your ZIP file. What immediately strikes me is the large number of images, which would make any simple export into MediaWiki difficult (in my opinion). The second problem is that some of your page titles duplicate page titles which already exist here, so titles would have to be manually adjusted. You'd honestly probably be best off with a semi-automated import. In other words, put your HTML files into a word processor (or wikificator) and do some search/replace commands to wikify them, and then really it's down to pasting in text and uploading images. Have you found http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikificator or http://www.uni-bonn.de/~manfear/html2wiki-tables.php yet? The latter claims to be a one click HTML-to-wiki converter. --McCormack 13:30, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

Templates: Template:About Wikiversity

You asked about the infobox class. Actually that's a good question. I don't have the foggiest. It was a hangover from I was still copying more blindly than today from pre-existing templates. I've changed it to something I can understand now. --McCormack 06:06, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

hello!

hey Jtneill, I am currently studying Philosophy and Physics at sydney University. I am interested in Philosophy of Mind more spercifically the attempt to characterise consciousness scientifically. Unfortunately, I can't go the Tucson conference in Arizona on exactly this issue which is on now because I am trapped in Sydney. Right now i am hoping to get ArsDigita Universities' complete Computer Science course up on Wikiversity. It is an intensive course that does only one subject a month. It was set up by disenting MIT lecturers who wanted to offer free education. It is meant to be the equivalent to the entire MIT undergraduate course on Computer Science, except condensed to a year. Entry was allowed only to those who had previously completed a Bachelors degree. Since no subjects are taught simultaneously, everyone in the course was in the same boat. I think it is most suitable to this self learning style on wikiversity. Now, why would someone who is studying Philosophy of Mind want to do this? Well Academically: problems with computational theory and crop up all the time in studies of Consciousness (turing + Godel's incompleteness theorem) etc etc. Another reason is, that as it stands online at ArsUni.org it is a complete course with no course materials left out. A problem I am facing is trying to get the video to a size viewable on a computer with bandwith. This is the ideal course for someone wanting to studying computer science who cannot go to a university and hope it gets used in places where the internet is crappy.--Daniel Jones 13:06, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

Mission statement

Hi James. Thanks for your message about the mission statement. The mission is a mystery to me. There are several versions of what the Wikimedia Foundation ordained, and it took me quite a while to work out which was the current version. And then it's not clear to me which words on that page are mere interpretation and commentary, and what the actual words of the proscribed mission are. For example, is it just the section marked "Mission", or is the "Scope" section or the rest also official in any way? Cormaggio is the one who ought to know. Anyway, if someone can clear up the mystery, great! Template? Easy. Done. --McCormack 09:09, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for your work on this - I really appreciate fresh eyes on something that's been developing over a long time for me. :-) I would say that the whole Wikiversity:Wikiversity project proposal document is "official", but that it still reflects a point in time, which was the culmination of a huge amount of discussion as well as a qualified rejection by the board of a previous proposal. I have already edited Wikiversity:Mission/Current to better reflect what I see as the general mission of Wikiversity - I've taken out the bit about coordinating with other WMF projects, because I don't think it's necessary to state explicitly, though perhaps others would disagree with me. My motivation here is to keep the mission statement as simple as possible in order to allow people to fill it with meaning and purpose. I would see the approved proposal as a starting point for building a project, rather than something we need to follow 'to the letter'. However, it is always useful for reference and guidance, and there are certain things that we absolutely must stick to: building learning resources, activities and communities, while not unnecessarily duplicating other WMF projects. I'll have a go at Wikiversity:Vision now. :-) Cormaggio talk 06:52, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

R Programming/Tutorial

RE: this edit. For pages that are imported it is best to move the page rather than cut and paste. One of the reasons for using import (or move) is to preserve the edit history, but the cut and paste looses attribution of authorship. For such a short stub page it is probably not a big deal, but something to be aware of. Also, the imported page might be linked to from wikibooks, and someone there might go following a link to find it here. They will find a deadend, and will have to try figure out where the content went from the revision history. --mikeu talk 21:57, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

It is probably not a big deal for this import. In other cases the original on WB was deleted, and that deletion discussion linked to the new location here. You could put a link on the talk page of each lesson that uses the material to the original copy on WB. I assume it will be keptat WB, and just possibly even expanded. --mikeu talk 00:10, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

Can you wait a day or two? I'm about to do a couple of things. Best to discuss again afterwards. --McCormack 14:29, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

  • I like the crocodile. Portals shouldn't go into their corresponding categories or the category tree ends up with a circular reference. Instead, just ensure that the portal is cross-referenced in the text at the top of the category page. --McCormack 16:22, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

Custodianship

Hi, James. I have officially nominated you on Wikiversity:Candidates for Custodianship. Crocodile training

On blocking yourself, go ahead and try! Don't forget the unblocking - we still need you. Microsoft disclaimer --McCormack 14:16, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

"dynamic IP allocation" - not something to worry too much about on Wikiversity, until we have millions of edits per day. Speaking as one of the blind, there are probably two issues which affect classes with naughty pupils. One is that if one pupil in the class gets blocked, even for a brief time, a lot of the others get blocked too because they're using the same IP. That's the bigger problem for WV to watch out for - i.e. if it's clear a class is all editing at the same time, try to deal with vandalism by a means other than a block. The second problem is the dynamic IP thing, where a block that lasts a long time theoretically affects someone entirely unrelated (not even in the same institution). As regards the second point, if a vandal has been vandalising from the same IP over a longer period of time, then it probably isn't dynamic, so an infinite block shouldn't be such a problem. Just don't infinite block first time round. --McCormack 16:54, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

Hello, possible definition of conciousness?

Hello, I have been thinking deeply about conciousness and the scienctific nature of atoms. I was thinking, in the extremely small spaces between atoms where no activity is present, is it possible that conciousness could lie here? Or is everything conciousness, the birds, trees, is everything in this physical world conciousness? And also what is consiousness, is it the essence of God? Is it what binds this universe together?

These questions may seem ridiculous and make me look stupid but they are few of the many questions i have been thinking about lately, and have looked for others output on the situation. Sorry if I'm wasting your time. Trevor Trevains, April 22, 2008 7:06 PM.

Help with Web 2.0 tools for teaching and learning

I know why you changed the title, but can you fix my links too? I need to use this tonight and I don't know the best way to do this yet. I tried to temporarily undo that change but nothing seems to happen. (The preceding unsigned comment was added by Anarchyandy (talkcontribs) )

Just a few comments about your deletion here. First, always check the "what links here" link before you delete, and correct all the in-bound links. "What links here" can also give clues about whether the edit was in good faith. In general, good faith edits shouldn't be deleted unless the sole author has requested it for a good reason. A good faith edit that is in the wrong place should be moved rather than deleted, or copied somewhere sensible and the original then deleted. If you don't know where to put it, then a subpage of the author's talk page is good. Hope this helps! Your huge quantity of edits are much appreciated. --McCormack 16:36, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

A couple more comments while my brain is slightly more functional than it was yesterday. The above comment really applies to speedy deletions. When an edit appears to be good faith, but falls foul of some other criterion, then there are quite a number of other solutions available - e.g. tagging the page in some way, proposing a vote for deletion, or getting down to rewriting the resource. A speedy delete of a good faith edit might still come into consideration if it is nevertheless a violation of some policy or other and the policy requires speedy deletion of violations. A good way of getting a feel for what should and should not be deleted is to examine the deletion log and see what others have been deleting. --McCormack 11:34, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

{{orphan}}

Just a small tip. When you create a great template after having a great idea, make sure both you and everyone else can find out about it in the long term (documentation, help page, etc). I think I've made quite a number of these things and then lost them in the bottomless bucket of the world of Wikimedia. --McCormack 11:30, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

On the usefulness of this particular template: I'm not sure. Did you intended this as an exact duplicate of the special pages list? Or were you more thinking of it for pages which were categorised, but still failed to be linked into any proper series of educational pages? --McCormack 15:17, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

It might be a good idea to clone it to Template:Portal Nav 0.6 before experimenting. ;-) --McCormack 13:01, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

  • I had a look at your experiments. I agree with the removal of the words "Wikiversity" and putting the miniature links on one line, and I've transferred this to the current main page. On the issue of whether or not to force open the first category: (1) Many people won't realize the +-signs open up further levels, so doing one as an example will help them use the tree; (2) The contents of the first category (i.e. educational level) are the most critical of all, particularly when it comes to correcting 18 months of skewed self-presentation, and the order of items here (i.e. from youngest to oldest) is very deliberate. --McCormack 09:52, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

Custodianship - interim report: airpsly fair-billis

Hi, James. You asked for an interim report. I looked up on http://www.strine.org.uk/ to find an appropriate term, and came up with "airpsly fair-billis". It took me about 5 minutes to work out the etymology, but it certainly fits. Seriously: I don't know of any stones you have left unturned, but don't let that slow you down! Fantastic work. If you've finished with the 0.6 experiments, then yes, delete them (carefully! remember the trouts are waiting...). --McCormack 12:31, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

  • Thanks for your new questions. You're stretching me beyond my competence now. I have never made use of fancy signatures, due to lack of time, mostly. I've had a look over the gadgets, but I don't really bother with them. I think that as a custodian, it's a good idea to make one's experience of Wikiversity as much like that of a newcomer as possible - but that's a purely personal perspective. I think some of the others go for every gadget they can! --McCormack 05:32, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

Pre-school portal

Hi James and thanks for your message. You may want to edit a bit more on that page - one of your links was broken. On the 2-column issue, the pros and cons need thinking through carefully. Target audience: kids, or their parents/educators? (I think, with this portal, very much the latter). Consistency with other portals? Technical considerations - i.e. column #3 is a transcluded template which is the same for all portals and even the main page, so which column would you get rid of? --McCormack 05:16, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

Another idea: if you are keen to have a kiddy-friendly portal (aimed at 4-5 year-olds), then fork. I think that in the first instance it will be parents who help their pre-schoolers around WV or who look for materials here to print out, so the main portal should be parent-orientated. But one could create a sub-portal (e.g. Portal:Pre-school Education/Kids Only) and point out to parents that this exists (or put a big chunky link at the top of the page). One could then do a large text, 2-column, large-icon, simpler version of the main portal. --McCormack 07:19, 3 May 2008 (UTC)
Well, I started thinking about that idea and decided to have a go myself. The initial version is rather rough-and-ready, but perhaps you see the idea? I've also added quite a pretty link-through from the main portal. What do you think? --McCormack 07:56, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

Gnuplot

Hi James. Against: security risks, as outlined on the page. For: unknown (perhaps you could explain more?). You should bear in mind that most of the extensions on Mediawiki.org would never make it remotely near approval for Wikimedia projects. --McCormack 04:23, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

psychology schools... topics

I've noticed School:Psychology, Topic:Social psychology, and Topic:Positive psychology are now redirects (others?). What sort of page might you think would be appropriate for the Topic and School namespaces with respects to psychology? Do you know of any examples where the topic and school namespace are used well (decently? appropriately? effectively?) for psychology or for other subjects? --Remi 07:11, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

  • My own guess is that the "right" way to go about this is a "bottom up" rather than a "top down" approach. In other words, use the psychology areas as an experiment in trying to find out how namespaces are or are not useful for organising a field of knowledge. The experience gained could then feed back usefully into the current namespace reform discussions. --McCormack 07:47, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
Okay... I moved Topic:Psychology to School:Psychology in order to keep some continuity with the somewhat current structure. --Remi 08:55, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi! Just quick note. Did you notice that School talk:Psychology redirects to Talk:Psychology? I am just asking because you are currently restructuring School:Psychology with some notes on its talk page (if I saw correctly), but the talk page refers to the mainspace article. --Gbaor 10:41, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

Funny template

Thanks for your note. I had a look at the page and couldn't see the problem. Browser-specific? Or viewer-specific? Provided you tell me exactly what needs changing, I can change it - no problem. • Going back to the original subject, it's something I noticed a while back with the project boxes but where I hadn't managed to fix most of them yet. It's simply a matter of newlines hanging around the place and spoiling the alignment. I've fixed all the interwiki ones, but the rest will have to wait. --McCormack 14:53, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

It´s great. Where do you want to Start the discussion? I open a link in "intercambio con la homóloga inglesa"(es:Facultad de Psicología). You can answer in inglish.

My first question is:

¿ what are the negative and positive things in the school? ¿ can you tell us your experience there?

Good template work

I saw your new participants template. Great. I'd been thinking about something like that for a while, but hadn't got round to it. Nice wiki work. --McCormack 16:18, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

Is this really supposed to be categorised as a completed resource: User:Jtneill/Tardis ? If so, perhaps it should be moved to the main namespace? --McCormack 08:54, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

  • Well, I'm really just thinking that the page name User:Jtneill/Tardis looks a little weird when you open up the completed resources in the navigation on the main page. I'm not sure what your intentions are for this resource, so I can't really say myself where it should go or how it should be categorised. --McCormack 11:58, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

Requesting user page deletion

Hi Jtneill I'm sorry to bug you with this (I couldn't find the appropriate template) but I'd like to request my user-page be deleted. I was going to use {{delete my page}} but that's for irrelevant articles. Hope I'm asking in the right way--Cailil 16:13, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

May I ask why a blanking of the page is not sufficient ? ----Erkan Yilmaz uses the Wikiversity:Chat (try) PS: Tag a learning project with completion status !! 16:14, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
I'm trying to protect my privacy by removing personal information that I naively added to my user page. If the page was simply blanked that info is still accessible in the history - if you need more information please email me--Cailil 00:33, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
Yes, that is a valid reason. But you should then also keep in mind that the page might be available on different servers, e.g. google. In reply to your msg (give me a clue as to how not to do this so public, but open is fine by me)... Let me explain where I am coming from. I teach various student types but on a Wed morning a group of unqualified ones. Just now they enjoyed quizzes - the first of style arch/quiz5 to which they write answers down, one arch/quiz4 about the clothes of colleague, another on arch/quiz6 music (I recorded some intros and they uploaded them locally). I deleted uncat before as I felt that the image might distract/possibly disturb them. I registered early on a Wikiveristy page that I was interested in this Special needs area but have not returned since due to workload. Anyway I hope this helps and am open to input. Finally so far my use of Wikiversity has been selfish as I find my way round; Mr Elliott (film man) would be good to emulate but ....

Quizzes and archives

Hi James. To adjust numbers and spacing, one would need to upgrade the quiz extension itself - i.e. programming, including getting the programming past those people who are holding up the subpage extension. Might be worth a try once you have a whole bunch of feature requests. On archiving: yes, I have noticed my page is a little full. I seem to invest my time in tidying up WV rather than my userspace! --McCormack 18:38, 18 June 2008 (UTC)

Dust Rider

In response to your comment on my wikipedia talkpage, the reason why I placed that template on my former dust rider account was mainly due to the fact that a number of edits which I've made with that account was transferred to Terra when I had the name change however a number of edits and comments which I made on talkpages or on Anonymous talkpages still had the old Dust Rider name - and I was well established with that username and if I hadn't placed that template on that account to alert user's that my username had indeed changed someone else could have created it and then got confused as to why user's where already talking to that person when in fact they were new - if there was a template other than that particular template to use then I would have used a different one. Terra 14:54, 21 June 2008 (UTC)

For the record, my question about the w:User:Dust Rider account was posted to w:User talk:Yun-Yuuzhan#Dust Rider, after originally being removed from the w:User talk:Terra page. -- Jtneill - Talk 15:20, 21 June 2008 (UTC)

Block mystery

Hi James. You managed to replace SBJ's infinite block with a shorter one, without unblocking, which the Mediawiki techs seem to think is impossible. Anyway, if a user is already infinitely blocked, you should leave the block in place. Was there a reason for your shorter block? --McCormack 14:22, 22 June 2008 (UTC)

Yes, I was catching up a bit late and didn't notice the earlier block. It was strange I could do it, because I couldn't then change it back to an infinite block. -- Jtneill - Talk 14:25, 22 June 2008 (UTC)

Tx - that helps. -- Jtneill - Talk 14:31, 22 June 2008 (UTC)

Re: Maybe slo w down categorisation

It does make sense. I actually categorized them that way for that exact reason. They were originally uncategorized and I thought if I put them in Psychiatry I would be reminded to contact you regarding it. I wondered if they could be both, but obviously not. I will continue categorizing as this is the only issue that I'm aware of regarding my actions in this area and I assure you, psychology will be safe from harm :) Apololgies for my ignorance, but what is IMHO? Donek (talk) - Go raibh mile maith agaibh 00:36, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

Motivational Interviewing

I was just about to begin editing this lesson before I saw you had added in some information. I understand this may be of some interest to the Psychology department so my plan has changed. I was going to discuss the history of it, then go into the stages of change (Prochaska and DiClemente), then the process of doctor-patient motivational interviewing and finish with some examples that the reader could use to practice with classmates. I am now wondering if Psychologists also use this technique. If so, I will stick to the original plan and we can share the content and I can change doctor to health professional. If not, I will split it up into knowledge (history and stages of change) and skills (the interviewing technique and the examples) and we could then share the knowledge page. Donek (talk) - Go raibh mile maith agaibh 20:24, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

Ok then, Here's the plan:

  • Motivational interviewing - history of, technique, examples.
  • A lesson in the knowledge section based on the stages of change model.

Re: Lecture 2.0

Actually I read it and had an aggressive feeling :-( Don't misunderstand please - this is just a personal comment, not on the topic itself: I just personally see the web 2.0 as a hype thing. To my mind came thoughts like: why not lecture 2.1 or 3.0 (be one version in advance :-)) or even 0.5 (back to the roots) ? Most important for a lecture is in my view the mind of the involved people (the person doing the lecture and the persons in the lecture who provide feedback - even a yawn is feedback). If the mind is open, other things become visible (e.g. technical possibilities; seeing that there exists a WV). ----Erkan Yilmaz uses the Wikiversity:Chat (try) 16:53, 25 July 2008 (UTC)

pages of participants

Hi James,

  • I read some participants pages: one user brought a smile on my face. On some I corrected some typos (I don't like my reading flow disturbed by typos and want to help others not feeling the same). But since your class is new to Wikiversity perhaps you could explain them that this is done not in bad intention. I could have always written on the talk pages before, but I thought that would make a fly to an elephant (e.g. create more misunderstandings or negative feelings). What do you say ?

Social psychology (psychology)

My two pence

Hi again. I had a look at Social psychology (psychology) out of curiosity - but also thinking about one of my favourite current hobbies called Wikiversity:Featured. My first impression on viewing this page is "not much" - because there isn't much to see when the boxes are collapsed. I opened them up one by one, and was more impressed each time more content came into view. This was my knee-jerk reaction on first viewing. When I thought about it for a couple more mintues, I reckoned the content of the boxes is so well laid out anyway that it doesn't confuse if initially displayed as all expanded. --McCormack 16:41, 3 August 2008 (UTC)

User:Nikkihiggins

Hi James. Is Nikki Higgins one of your students? This user has been uploading a lot of images, at least a couple of which are clearly a copyvio, and most of the rest look strongly like stock photos and therefore also copyvio. Probably all of this user's uploads need deleting, but someone might like to break it gently to the user. --McCormack 03:43, 5 August 2008 (UTC)

If you put this into the public domain, can you, as the author, tag it as such? Thanks! --McCormack 07:25, 5 August 2008 (UTC)

I know there has been some talk about using the Commons uploader instead, as this is more informative - less need for tutorials. --McCormack 12:37, 5 August 2008 (UTC)

Risky business there, James! Editing one of my templates could land you a whale-slapping... ;-) Hope you enjoy the modified template. Does it really do everything you hoped for? --McCormack 05:10, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

Thinking about the categorisation... Currently the template reckons the "rootname" of the page is the best thing to categorise it under, and advises that the category for the rootname should be categorised under "lectures". But an alternative might be to create "rootname/lectures" and categorise the latter under "lectures" instead. What do you think? --McCormack 05:18, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
Incidentally, "COK" stood for "Category OK". --McCormack 05:20, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
I think the reason your lectures are still appearing in Category:Lectures is because of the job queue - i.e. this needs to clear first. --McCormack 05:22, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
Capitalisation: yes, difficult one that. I noticed as well. You may have to edit my template. Here's a tin of fish as advance payment. ;-) We could share it. --McCormack 06:08, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

Image licencing

Hi again. I've noticed another of your students uploading images with no licencing information attached. This time it's just some written notes - so the permissions are sure to be OK. But an image with no explicit permissions is nevertheless a copyvio case. How are you getting on with educating your students about image uploading? --McCormack 07:17, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply. My experience with OGG video is dreadful. I usually end up having to restart the browser and/or computer. I think the OGG player is not sufficiently mature yet. Students on Wikiversity usually record their podcasts in more conventional formats and provide external links (which work). --McCormack 12:57, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

Bytes

Why would you want a byte-count? Just curiosity - or is there something clever here?! A word count might be more useful. It would need an extension, and the Foundation is unlikely to grant us one. --McCormack 13:00, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

Tame versus wild

Wondered if you had any ideas about this one? Recently I've been playing with the distinction "tame versus wild" to describe different kinds of community which evolve at Wikiversity. Perhaps you've read some of the stuff? Anyway, I still like the term "wild", but I find the word "tame", as the opposite, unsatisfactory and almost derogatory. I'm looking for an alternative, but having difficulty. It has to be something which forms a decent collocation with "audience" and "community", as in "wild audience/wild community" but meaning the opposite. See Wikiversity:tame audience. Any ideas? --McCormack 15:18, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

Categories

Heya :-). Waaay to tired to really get into it, but redundant categories can be very useful on Wikiversity, because we can use DynamicPageList to keep track of things. I'll explain more in the morning... off to bed now. --SB_Johnny talk 00:30, 31 August 2008 (UTC)

Ah I see... I didn't know what the "case studies" category was used for otherwise. The DPL works like this... so if all the content pages are kept in the main category, they can be tracked via a community watchlist. Maybe just replace Category:Case studies with Category:Ethical Management of the English Language Wikipedia/Case Studies, but not at the same time removing Category:Ethical Management of the English Language Wikipedia. Wikipedia, commons, and other "non-subpaged/non-DPL" projects tend to use categories in a tree (so redundancy is bad), but there are other ways to use them (the Bloom Clock, for example, uses them as primary content). In general the way categories work is going to be different for each subproject within Wikiversity. A year or two ago I did some work on "local manuals of style" on Wikibooks: see b:WB:LMOS for examples (might be worth developing further here). --SB_Johnny talk 09:01, 31 August 2008 (UTC)

Some feedback

Hi James

Thank you for your frank, positve and very constructive feedback on my e-portfolio. Thanks also for the internal Wiki links – I’m on the lookout for some new techniques. I am also interested in your idea of a student textbook!

Well, my rationalisation is my need for formative feedback. This is especially so for me in this subject where we are experimenting with different ways of working and all items of assessment are in the final weeks of the course. You don’t want to get to the end and find you’re on the wrong track! I was initially hesitant about this online approach but now find (as you can see) I’m a bit addicted to it! It has really helped me to ‘tease out’ concepts I would normally have glossed over (at this stage in the semester anyway). I have also done a lot of thinking about content, textbooks, contexts, social psychology, psychology and how these are wrapped up in a university degree (and I have changed some of my attitudes – maybe not behaviours). So you have certainly facilitated my engagement in the subject and more. I also think that your dedication to our learning, different approach to teaching and the incredible effort you put into these subjects should be acknowledged – Congratulations. James - thanks for your help with uploading images. I think I removed the one without the licence and uploaded a new one with a licence - as I couldn't work out how to edit the first one! Think I have the hang of it now - in order to do basic functions! Kate (The preceding unsigned comment was added by Khayne (talkcontribs) 10:42, 9 September 2008)

Hi can you help me with navigation box. i went through the Intermediate Wikiversity but unable to rightly creat one. Onlyramram 06:42, 10 September 2008 (UTC)

Hello

Thanks for the links James.

I have decided to run a poll (sorta) with some students at the UC to see what exactly it is we fickle "chooks" expect from our lectures and lecturers. Is it cool if I just post their ideas up on the favourite presentations page? MandaG 03:30, 11 September 2008 (UTC)MandaG

Project boxes

Yes - I am playing with them. Rather unsuccessfully. Funny to find out that the changes were working on the psychology template when they weren't working with the history one! I'll look into this. --McCormack 06:18, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

I think I've sorted it out now. --McCormack 06:27, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

Student Expections Page

Hello yet again!

I did indeed like the idea of student expectations so I think I've created a user friendly page for people to edit and comment on but I am not sure how to invite people to post on it. I added it to my user profile but I don't know how to link it to the actual page, it comes up as a red link. If I ask really superbly nicely could you fix this for me please. Conflict and incivility project

Hi James, do you intend to participate in the Learning from conflict and incivility project as a lurker, or were you going to develop a narrative (or other resources)? Lurkers are fine btw :-), and any comments you have would be greatly appreciated. Cormaggio talk 07:45, 12 September 2008 (UTC)

That's great James, thanks. I had forgotten you were another Lewinian - nice! And humour - I think there's an interesting discussion to be had about when it's productive, and when it's not - there's clearly been a lot of stuff recently that seems funny to the person 'doing it', but not to the person to whom it's being 'done'... Cormaggio talk 08:34, 12 September 2008 (UTC)
I also tend to follow that maxim myself. :-) Cormaggio talk 08:45, 12 September 2008 (UTC)

No - not even a water flea in it for you, mate. Just create category class notes and add it to "resources by type". Nothing clever. You could also make "class notes" a subcategory of things like "lectures" or "lessons" or "courses". Ditto e-portfolio - or have you already got that one as a "type"? --McCormack 17:02, 16 September 2008 (UTC)

Becoming a mentor for new custodians

Hi James. I think we're well over the first 3-month period of custodianship, which means you are now an "experienced" custodian and are eligible to sign yourself up as a potential mentor to other new custodians. I think you would be very good at this. Please feel welcome to add yourself at Wikiversity:List of custodian mentors. --McCormack 06:08, 20 September 2008 (UTC)

Custodianship

Hi Jtneill,

I've placed a request at Candidates for Custodianship for going through another probationary period - Although yes in the past with my former Terra username I had went through the probationary period but unfortunately the RFC failed but however though if possible could I become one again - or is it too soon and should I wait. Lost Article

Hey James, I think when I reformatted my page I may have lost one of my reflections. Its the one on Jane Elliots "experiment". Any suggestions on how I can get it back? Thanks MandaG 12:25, 5 October 2008 (UTC)MandaG

ah my hero! Where did it come from and now apart from my discussion page where did it go?

Soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo is it possible to change my subpages thingy to only include my tute 6 (jane elliot thingy)and then I'll make some extra links for other tutes, just so I dont have double up pages...

I normally would, but in this case that user did sign her contribution; he/she just signed it in the wrong spot. I felt it was therefore most appropriate to simply move the signature. The Jade Knight (d'viser) 14:23, 6 October 2008 (UTC)

Subpages

Hi James, How do I add to, or remove from, my sub-pages list? The sub-page 'Journals' is not required and I have just set up new sub-pages: 'Groups' and 'Prosocial Behaviours' (I will also need one for 'Environmental' after the next lecture). Thanks Jenny O 05:23, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for your prompt response. I have flagged the redundant subpage for deletion. However, what I was actually asking is how do I add a subpage to the list of subpages you added to the bottom of my "homepage"? When I create a new subpage it is not automatically added to that list. Wikiversity:Vision 2009 Updates?

Hi Jt. Do you know who is taking care of Wikiversity:Vision 2009. I was thinking maybe we should post a gauge gadget (Excel Chart?) to indicate progress on issues raised in the Vision 2009. This would help to get the attention of the community on issues requiring immediate attention. Maybe even raise those at the Colloquium for discussion? Please let me know what is happening. I am in and out of office but I will reply as sson as I can. --Thuvack | talk | Blog 11:30, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

Yes, something like that. A basic graph to gauge progress on the goals we set for ourselves. maybe we be able to fast track most if not all once spotlight is back to the project. I am at work right now. we can chat via IRC if you like. --Thuvack | talk | Blog 12:24, 17 October 2008 (UTC)
That is excellent. bearing in mind that we literally up to november to complete these. whatever remains can be carried over to Vision 2010. I guess you will create the thread on the Colloquium, then?. I will have a thoughrough look and see which task I can work on whenever i come here. --Thuvack | talk | Blog 12:39, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

Psych essay question

Hi James

For my essay topic, I was going to do what you suggested “what is sex role theory and what has been found from sex role research” could I do the same question just

a) what is gender role theory and what has been found from gender role research, or to be even more specific b) what is gender role theory and what has been found from gender role research concerning intimate relationship quality between men and women

Just when I looked a bit more into sex role theory as opposed to gender I found the research went off into cog psych and biology a bit and the text has even less on sex roles than it does gender. Also I already have heaps of articles on gender and relationships that I would really like to use.

So in discussing gender role theory thought I could look at the major theories that account for gender roles eg. gender schema theory, evolutionary theory, social role theory. Then on the research bit just discuss the major finding and how they relate back to the theories.

Is this okay?? any feedback would be great.

Thanks, Belinda

p.s sorry also sent u an email, just wasn’t sure if the email system would be dodgy or not.

Bel 23:27, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

Respected Custodian, this is to discuss a new format

I request you to open up a page format similar to 'School' in functioning, whose use would be similar to 'Reading group' but taking it to a higher level as people may discuss a large number of books from a specific topic, eg.-'?????:Classical Texts','?????:Math Olympiads','?????:Books on Sherlock Holmes',etc.
I expect a page with whatever name suits it [Library, Academy, or Book Club] from you considering you a custodian of World's largest online Center for Learning.Tushant 12:48, 24 October 2008 (UTC)

G'day Wikimedian :-)

Whilst it's quite likely you'll have heard this news on the grapevine, in your email inbox, or even in person - I thought that it was sufficiently exciting to warrant giving each of you a 'new messages' orange bar! This particular orange bar has been brought to you to let you know that Wikimedia Australia is now open for members!

I'm not on the committee or anything, and that's where the credit is due in getting everything to this point, but I think it would be absolutely fantastic for folks who wish to support the australian wiki community, to go ahead and sign up - we're quite likely to be the world's fatest growing chapter at the moment! Join Us :-)

Here's a little more about membership, and the mailing list in particular is well worth signing up to as well, and is a good forum to get answers to any questions answered, or to share any ideas. I've dropped these notes in under my own steam, and you've received one because you're on this list - feel free to ask me any questions, or anything - I can certainly point you in the right direction :-) cheers all, Privatemusings 04:04, 13 November 2008 (UTC)

{{history}}

Please never add this template unmodified to a page—it adds stuff directly to the History supercategory, and we're trying to avoid that. The Jade Knight (d'viser) 06:01, 21 November 2008 (UTC)

I see. Well, if you'd like to. I do think Geoff Plourde created a modified version of the template which allows (requires?) you to specify what category to put it in, but I forget what he named it. The Jade Knight (d'viser) 09:28, 21 November 2008 (UTC)

Template port to wikibooks

Hello. I tried porting the templates on Help:Pretty_Boxes but the main template - b:Template:IconBoxLeft does not work properly. I can see round cornered boxes with themes, but not the "pretty boxes". Can you tell me what I should such that the templates can be used on wikibooks as well?
