"Buyer Beware" is a short story that was published in the canon book Dark Legends, written by George Mann, illustrated by Grant Griffin, and published on July 28, 2020.

Plot summary[]

Ambassador Slokin was always looking to expand his vast collection of ancient treasures. During a visit to Batuu, Slokin found a skull-like mask at Dok-Ondar's Den of Antiquities. The mask was black and slender with gold filigree. Dok-Ondar agreed to sell the Mask for a significant price but gave Slokin a dire warning about the mask. Ignoring the warning of the mask being dangerous to those unworthy Slokin buys the mask.

Later while studying the mask Slokin finally decides to put the mask on. While wearing the mask he is able to view the life of the original owner of that mask. Slokin begins to mirror the actions of the original owner to gain the same kind of wealth and power that the original owner acquired. While meeting with the Ambassador to Hadros, following the example of the mask, Slokin blackmailed the Ambassador and end up with a small fortune in precious metals. Following another mask vision, Slokin decides to poison his superior, Gorson, in order to get a promotion.

The next vision was very different, Slokin witnessed the murder of the previous mask owner by a trusted ally. Following the vision Slokin becomes paranoid and realizes his longtime aid Potniss can no longer be trusted. However Potniss had thought of everything and the treasures would be his. And the mask found its way back to Dok-Ondar's waiting its next owner.
