Mexico and nearby regions in 1992.

Mexico was a traditional nation of the planet Earth. Located on the continent of North America, it primarily comprised the land south of the Rio Grande River and north of the isthmus of Central America. It was initially settled by American aboriginals including the Maya and Aztec. Its capital was Mexico City.

History and specifics[]

In 1519, the forces of Hernán Cortés conquered Mexico for Spain. He forced his crew to burn their sailing vessels after landing in Mexico, compelling them to continue onward. (TOS - The Motion Picture: Echoes comic: "Issue 2")

The first pandemic in Earth's western hemisphere occurred in Mexico, as Cortés' crew brought the influenza virus with him. (ST - Destiny novel: Mere Mortals)

The Mexican people rebelled and gained independence from Spain in 1821. (TNG episode: "The High Ground")

In 1836, Mexican troops invaded the Republic of Texas and fought at the Battle of the Alamo. (DS9 episode: "Once More Unto the Breach")

In 1859, San Francisco citizen Joshua Norton declared himself to be Emperor of the United States and Protector of Mexico. (TOS novel: Ishmael)

In September 1955, Hurricane Hilda killed 200 people in Mexico. (DS9 novel: Unity)

In April 1994, Khan Noonien Singh was aware of a peasant uprising in Mexico, portending of the general threat of war he felt everywhere on the planet. (TOS - The Eugenics Wars novel: The Rise and Fall of Khan Noonien Singh, Volume 2)

MACO Sergeant Selma Guitierrez's father and his family were from Rosarito, Mexico. (ENT novel: Last Full Measure)

Following the Setlik III Massacre in 2362, Benjamin Maxwell brought the ashes of his wife and children to Puerto Vallarta in Mexico. (DS9 novel: Force and Motion)

In the 2370s, B'Elanna Torres' father John Torres resided in the country. (VOY novel: Pathways)

Alternate timelines[]

In a timeline created by Leonard McCoy when he saved the life of Edith Keeler, Mexico was a member of the Treaty Organization of the Americas. When Hawaii was bombed in 1944, Mexico joined the United States, Brazil, Canada, and other nations in declaring war on Germany. In 1954, World War II was ongoing, but Mexico had done its part to prevent additional attacks on North America. (TOS - Crucible novel: Provenance of Shadows)

According to Khan Noonien Singh, in September 1992 Augment Dictator Alexander Newton annexed Mexico into the North American Coalition. By 1996, Augment infighting led to Mexico becoming part of Newton's New American Empire. Asahf Ferris sent her armies to battle in what had formerly been called the country of Mexico. By the end of 1996, the Augment dictatorships were overthrown. (TOS - Khan comics: "Issue 2", "Issue 3")

In January 2380, The Times reporter Edmund Atkinson covered a speech virtually from a beach in Mexico. (TNG novel: Articles of the Federation)

In September 2385, a group of children from Mexico took a school trip by shuttle to the Cetacean Institute. (ST - The Fall novel: The Poisoned Chalice)

In the 2380s, Starfleet Admiral Alynna Nechayev maintained a beachfront condominium in Mexico as a safe house. After Section 31 was exposed to the public in 2386, a warrant was issued for her arrest. Giving the slip to Federation Security Agency officers who went to her upstate New York home, Nechayev beamed to her Mexican condo. She was taken into custody a short time later on the beach outside the condo. (TNG novel: Available Light)

Earth Starfleet officer Malcolm Reed commented that he once traveled to a spa in Mexico and it was "the most relaxing place" to which he had been. After spending time aboard a Klingon vessel, Reed indicated that it did not compare to time in Enterprise's decontamination chamber. (ENT episode: "Sleeping Dogs")

In 2270, while weighing options after disrupting the Mercan civilization, Spock saw parallels to Cortés' history in Mexico. (TOS novel: The Abode of Life)
