RFV nominations
[edit]When nominating something for WT:Requests for verification (as at bv Nederland), please don't forget to add a discussion over at the RFV page itself, otherwise the request for verification stays in limbo. (The RFV template generates a link allowing you to easily add the nomination to the RFV page; it shows up as a plus sign between parentheses, that is: (+), in the template box.) — Mnemosientje (t · c) 14:56, 7 November 2023 (UTC)
Welcome
[edit]Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.
If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.
These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:
- Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
- Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
- Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
- If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
- If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
- Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (
~~~~
) which automatically produces your username and timestamp. - You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.
Enjoy your stay at Wiktionary! This, that and the other (talk) 03:09, 9 November 2023 (UTC)
Headword templates
[edit]These are required, even for inflected-form entries. If there aren't any for the language you're editing, use {{head|[language code]|[part of speech]}}
or {{head|[language code]|[part of speech] forms}}
, so a pronoun lemma form for Hamer-Banna would use {{head|amf|pronoun}}
and a pronoun inflected-form entry for Hamer-Banna would use {{head|amf|pronoun form}}
. This standardizes the formatting and puts the page in the right categories so one can find them from the language's main category page, for example: Category:Hamer-Banna language. Chuck Entz (talk) 19:18, 10 November 2023 (UTC)
I've deleted this. If you want to experiment, do it on your user page or on another website, thanks. PUC – 11:44, 16 December 2023 (UTC)
- Bit harsh, but PUC is not wrong - Saph668 (talk • contribs) if you didn't have the list backed up before PUC deleted it and would like to recreate it in userspace instead of the template namespace (where it indeed doesn´t belong), let me know, as a sysop I can retrieve data from deleted pages. Looked like a lot of effort went into it, and others have similar projects in subpages in userspace that are tolerated (e.g. User:Rua/Modern Germanic), so I'm sure people won't be bothered by it if you were to create a subpage of your userpage with the same content. — Mnemosientje (t · c) 18:20, 19 December 2023 (UTC)
- I did have it saved, and TTO restored it to my user space already. The only reason I had it in a template was in case anyone wanted on their user page, but it apparently never got used. Thanks, though. -saph 🍏 19:30, 19 December 2023 (UTC)
- Ah good to see, didn't notice the page. — Mnemosientje (t · c) 21:22, 19 December 2023 (UTC)
spacing in IPA
[edit]Hi,
When you replace thin spaces in IPA transcription, please replace them with regular spaces so the delimiters don't overstrike the IPA characters. Thanks. kwami (talk) 07:44, 17 September 2024 (UTC)
- I really do not see the point in this. It displays fine in our font. Is there some consensus or at least previous discussion about this? -saph668 (user—talk—contribs) 15:58, 17 September 2024 (UTC)
- Which font do you use?
- It overlaps in the best IPA font, Gentium, because it does not have kerning.
- (BTW, if you know of a better free IPA font, we should add that to the list in the WP article.) kwami (talk) 23:16, 17 September 2024 (UTC)
BTW, this changed the IPA, though I don't know Armenian to fix it. kwami (talk) 07:56, 17 September 2024 (UTC)
- Oh, I didn't notice that, thanks. -saph668 (user—talk—contribs) 11:02, 17 September 2024 (UTC)
