NWO

[edit]

Dear John, you just reverted my edit at the talk page on NWO (CT). To identify myself: I am the editor suggesting not to feed the troll, as well as the editor who has put up the small list of literature last week. The edit was meant to convey that the other IP user needs to understand that it's the tone of what he says that makes a bad impression, possibly less than his point. For this I used the German saying "Der Ton macht die Musik" with a link to a translation, which does not quite convey the same, but makes it sufficiently clear. Nevertheless, I did not revert your edit. And yes, I will register as a user soon. 134.106.40.32 (talk) 14:25, 5 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Oops - sorry, I didn't realize what it was. When I went to the link, I didn't realize it was a translation and thought I was at some kind of free music site. I have undone my revert. It will be good to have another contributor to New World Order (conspiracy theory), so I applaud your decision to register. John Shandy`talk 15:06, 5 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

our conversation on nwo

Hi there.

[edit]

How can you deny the obvious? Are you scared of the Illuminati? Don't be! Nothing to be scared of. They've already lost. They just don't know it yet.

But, if you are truly not convinced about the NWO, then I'd suggest looking into some of the people who have been killed trying to expose it. The evidence they have gathered at best is a good starting point. The information I have I've been researching for about 9 months. I'll tell you this, just about any conspiracy you can name leads right back to the Illuminati. I'm a Jew, I mean a real Jew. Spiritually though, not by blood. I keep the laws, statutes, commandments, holy days, and the faith in Jesus.

What would you say if I told you the real Jews were black people? Now take in mind that I'm white myself. All the evidence adds up to support that theory, including the Bible. The Bible states that in some scriptures the only time the Jews will be gathered is at the second coming the Lord. Only when King David has been resurrected. They will dwell safely! I'm not anti-semitic, I am Semitic.. spiritually! Did you know these so called "African Americans" can actually trace their DNA back to the children of Israel? Did you know a certain tribe in Africa called the Bantu tribe has actual artifacts from Solomon's temple? It goes much deeper than that my friend.

If you want the scriptures I'll give them to you. This is one the topics that's going to be in my book. — Preceding unsigned comment added by TheIsraelite777 (talkcontribs) 00:02, 30 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There's nothing obvious about your claims, other than (a) You've not provided any evidence or reliable sources to support your claims or justify your beliefs, (b) Just because someone died doesn't mean it was related to what they may or may not have been investigating, (c) I have no reason to believe that these dead investigators aren't just as delusional and paranoid as any other conspiracist, (d) I have no reason to believe that they conducted their investigations in an ethical, unbiased, intellectually honest fashion. I'm not scared of an Illuminati, because I lack any belief in such a secret cabal's existence in the present day. When you keep saying "they," I almost wonder if you're referring to voices whispering in your head.
As for your second paragraph, about Jews and African Americans... My goodness you have a bizarre worldview. First of all, the Bible is about as useful as a grain of sand - it is a very fallible text that has been written by mortal men, translated and retranslated over thousands of years. Why you think anything said in the Bible constitutes proof or evidence is beyond reason. Aside from that, I don't know why anyone would revere a text that contains such horrifying atrocities, endorses rape, murder, ethnic cleansing, hate, and crimes against humanity. This is even without considering the enormous amount of contradictions found in the Bible. Furthermore, I don't know why you revere the Bible and yet discard the sacred texts of Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, The Book of Mormon, etc. When you understand why you don't believe in any other gods or religious dogmas, then you'll understand why I take it further and don't believe in yours. I hope you're not claiming that African Americans or Jews are somehow less-than-human. I embrace people from all backgrounds and cultures - who they are is far more important to me than what they are.
No, I don't want scriptures - I think they're rubbish. If your book is going to derive from such scriptures, then I'm afraid it will be rubbish as well. Here in the real world, reality isn't ever what you or I want it to be - it reveals itself to us as it is, and it cannot be crammed into your worldview. You're better off exploring the wonders of the universe using rational skepticism and the tool of science. To each his own, I guess. John Shandy`talk 05:50, 30 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You just gave yourself away, John. You are the biggest liar and traitor known to America probably. Of course you are going to deny, THEY ARE SECRET SOCIETIES. And you have probably sworn and oath to not reveal anything that happens in the Illuminati. I'M NOT STUPID. Stop playing dumb with me. I'm getting really irritated with your nonsense. You obviously want to serve Satan by spreading disinformation. You know dang good and well most of the researchers for the NWO have died. HUNDREDS of people have been silenced. That is fact. And there is NOTHING you can say to change that. All the histories books in all the schools have been doctored. That is fact also. — Preceding unsigned comment added by TheIsraelite777 (talkcontribs) 22:35, 30 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Go ahead, blast me and accuse me of whatever you wish. That is the nature of vindictive individuals such as yourself. I laugh at the idea that I want to serve Satan by spreading disinformation - I don't even believe in a Satan. You've provided no evidence, so your "facts" are nothing but delusional paranoid garbage. Go waste someone else's time. I'm sure you can find some young minds to indoctrinate. John Shandy`talk 23:23, 30 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

South Africa

[edit]

Regarding your question on my talk page, i have to start by saying that often there is no absolute truth but rather matters of opinion. There are complaints about the new South Africa (some of fundamental nature, some concerning aspects of the transition and it's outcome) and the change was too profound to be able to satisfy everybody, even more so as these decades of racial inequality cannot be erased in 17 years. Anyway, the electorate in ZA is no longer selected by racial criteria, the "redistribution" of wealth/resources is processed very gently (my opinion), the country does no longer destabilize it's neighbours. The quotas the government has introduced in several areas, as you've mentioned, are a frequently discussed topic and a core issue in the racial discourse. Their introduction have been justified that the state of things (the racial composition) in (for example) the private economy after the end of apartheid have changed too hesitantly. Same is true for sports teams, the objections being here that quality and not race should be decisive and that the national team should mirror the (racial composition of this) sport in this country. In the case of rugby, people object that this has never been the sport of blacks (but rather football/soccer) - one the other hand one could ask "Why?", because they are not interested in or because they weren't given the possibility? (the hen-egg-problem) It will take some time until a state of balance is achieved, I'd say.--Severino (talk) 21:44, 10 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

International Finance

[edit]

I did a lot of research from reliable sources and books. You seem to have reverted it. Please help me figure out what went wrong and how I can site references properly. Because that is the only possible reason why it got deleted.

Note: I need immediate help as this article is a part of my college assignment and my deadline is tomorrow. Thanks

Regards Rashmi — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rashminarayan (talkcontribs) 04:32, 10 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't notice before, but I see now you were meaning to reference the Maurice D. Levi and Jeff Madura textbooks. I am familiar with those academics and their textbooks are good and definitely reliable sources. So that was my mistake in not seeing that. However, you referenced them, but did not cite them. You need to fully cite anything that is not of your own thinking per WP:CITE (and remove anything that is of your own thinking, in accordance with WP:NOR). Given that you are unaccustomed to Wikipedia's practices, I don't think you'll be able to make good use of the citation templates, so for now go through your content and, anything that is from the Levi or Madura sources, add a typical citation at the end of the content, using the author's last name and the year of the publication, like:
  • (Levi, 2005)
  • (Madura, 2007)
Use whatever the proper years are (I guessed 2005 and 2007 based on the books I have from those authors).
I intend to eventually make some drastic improvements to the International finance article in the future, so I guess minor issues I have with your content additions can be addressed later on after your assignment deadline.
However, one issue I see is the section on Paul Krugman. While I acknowledge that he is a prominent academic in matters regarding international finance and international economics, and indeed follow him myself, I don't quite think he deserves his own section in the article. It is likely a violation of WP:UNDUE to give him such weight. Instead, the article could perhaps have a section on academic pioneers of international finance research and theory development, in which Krugman could be mentioned among other researchers.
Those were the main problems I had with your content additions, and the article is weak enough as-is. Really, I should devote more attention to it but I have been preoccupied with graduate school and work. Try some of my suggestions, because while referencing sources is good (and required), it's impossible to tell what content comes from what source if it's improperly cited. For now, the citation style I demonstrated should suffice until the article can be tended to later on. Consider trying my suggestion for the Paul Krugman section as well (get rid of the section or rename it and include information on prominent academics of international finance, or perhaps create a section for major discoveries/breakthroughs/models or global events that have taken place and which are important to the field, with references and citations of course. Definitely do not add user signatures to the article; specifically, don't click the signature icon when editing and don't type four tildes (tildes are the ~ character), to keep the article clean. Best wishes, John Shandy`talk 05:08, 10 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks John...You explained quite well where I lacked. I look forward to improving the article after my deadline. That sounds more genuine as right now its all a little rushed up on my side. Also I now see your point for removing a whole section that I had put for Paul Krugman for an article on International Finance. Thanks again. Will try citing like you explained!--Rashminarayan (talk) 14:20, 10 October 2011 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rashminarayan (talkcontribs) 14:15, 10 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Grant writing advertising

[edit]

Hi, thanks for reverting. There's a clutch of related articles that needs monitoring for link-spam. I'll hunt them down and make sure they're watchlisted. Tony (talk) 03:26, 10 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No problem, I've been reverting link spam on grant-related articles for quite a long time, almost as long as I've been an editor. The anonymous users just don't get it or don't care. It may actually be worthwhile to add warning/notification banner templates (if any exist) to those articles' external links sections, or to just delete the external links sections altogether. John Shandy`talk 03:45, 10 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the kind words

They were very encouraging and thank you! The article isn't where I'd like it to be yet but I haven't had enough time to get much more done there myself in quite awhile. But someday, I hope. Thanks again. Professor marginalia (talk) 04:42, 29 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Influence of Dixit on Krugman re Int'l trade & exchange rates

[edit]

Any thoughts on how to document this, from what sources and to what extent? I made a start on a start here: [2] Would appreciate it if you replied on the article Talk page.

The problem is that I'm citing Dixit, a primary source for the fact to be documented, and it may well be putting undue weight on his own contribution to Krugman's contribution, maybe even undue weight on Krugman's contribution as well. I see here that you've involved yourself in relevant matters before, so your input would be especially useful, I think. Yakushima (talk) 04:25, 17 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for contacting me, Yakushima. I'm afraid I don't quite have a useful answer at hand. I'm far less familiar with Dixit's work. His publications are on my long and meandering To-Read list. I also freely admit that I generally avoid BLP articles because I consider them to be akin to walking on egg shells. I really only touch one BLP and even then only here or there and just poking and prodding with a 20 ft pole. ;)
I see you also sought out input from Lawrence Khoo; he's very knowledgable, and probably moreso than I with regards to Dixit. I may read the source you linked to, but tomorrow I am graduating with my master's degree and will be busy this coming week. Hopefully soon-ish I'll be able to offer more helpful feedback. Triangular arb

[edit]

I noticed your work on Triangular Arb and it looks pretty good. If I have the time soon (doubtful), I may make some changes along the following lines.

  • 1st - we seem to leave the existence and profitability of arb opportunities sorta up in the air, all the while citing the paper "The Mirage of Triangular Arbitrage in the Spot Foreign Exchange Market". I'd be firmer in saying real (vs apparent) existence and profitability is unlikely or minimal.
  • 2nd - I'd use 1,000,000 units in the examples and give the check procedure, i.e. |[S(theoretical) - S(actual)]| x 1,000,000 units = Arb profit in units (generally not $ here)
  • 3rd - Ida left in the synthetic trade. It's a pretty standard synthetic example (hope I can find a ref)

Keep up the good work,

Smallbones (talk) 22:40, 10 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your remarks, I'm glad others are noticing these oft-neglected international finance articles. WikiProject Finance itself is generally very quiet. I've been making substantial revisions very boldly lately to a number of articles that cited no sources and often times merely bombarded readers with math. I'm certainly open to ideas for improving the triangular arbitrage article.
  1. It's been a while since I've read triangular arbitrage since my streak of sweeping revisions to it. Clarifying the language sounds like a good idea. I think what you're saying is, it may not presently be clear to the readers what the difference is between identifying an arbitrage opportunity versus identifying an arbitrage opportunity that is indeed profitable, wherein the former is apparent while the latter is real. Is this what you're saying should be made clearer?
yes
  1. If I recall, I think I took those values I used in the example from one of the books I referenced, perhaps either Madura or Eun & Resnick. I'm not sure I consider it of consequence that the example use denominations of 5,000,000 rather than 1,000,000. Also, are you suggesting we not use specific currency only in the check procedure, or in the entire example? I figure it's helpful to have them in the example, but would understand that the check procedure, applicable to any cross rate pair, use generic units rather than say $.
no, I mean in any units other than $ (euro, yen, C$, etc.) simply because the US $ is usually the common denominator and a power of ten just because it's easier to see the relationships.
  1. Yea, I got rid of that because I couldn't find sources for it (though my search may not have been exhaustive) and I wasn't quite familiar with the practice of taking a synthetic position. So that was just a lack of familiarity on my part.
It's a standard example (maybe too simple) for synthetics, but maybe more often in lectures than in papers.
I'd like to add a wealth of more references discussing evidence and profitability, but have yet to find the time. I think I may have a few more papers on triangular arbitrage downloaded, but haven't found the time (or resilience) to dive into them. Thanks again for the feedback, I look forward to helping improve the article. John Shandy`talk 01:02, 11 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
See answers above. I doubt that there are too many other papers on profitability - it's just too simple and easy to do for this to be a regularly profitable arb. I found WP:Finance to be more trouble than it was worth many years ago, but maybe it has changed since then. There were too many folks pushing there own products, arguments about notation. Overly simple undergrad explanations vs. overly complex grad school math. It's nice to see somebody in the middle. Smallbones (talk) 01:30, 11 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

John Shandy - regarding the discussion over at Talk:Bilderberg Group#Authenticity of "official" website - I am not writing for your personal benefit, as much as you might benefit from reading it with care. If you do not care for what I say, ignore it. Do not feel you need to write five words for my one. If your time is being wasted, remember you are not required to waste it on Wikipedia. - Crosbie 05:45, 13 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Don't worry, I read with great care when I come across nonsense. You have persisted with speculation, and continue to distract the discussion by not addressing the counterarguments and instead asking peripheral questions about things I've said which really don't need clarification. Either you have reliable sources documenting that the website is a hoax, or you need to concede and let the thread rest. I never intended to respond more than once to that thread, but you kept asking side questions or presenting the same baseless argument. John Shandy`talk 08:01, 13 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Requesting Guidance

[edit]

Hello. I'm new to the wiki community and would like to start working on editing the Property Insurance page with the help and collaboration of more experienced contributors from Project Finance Participants. There is also a recommendation the Chartis article be merged with AIG's page. I think the Property Insurance page could be strengthened with parts of AIG's page since it shows how current events and emerging trends effect it's regulation by the government. Hurricane Sandy and updated payouts of the WTC are not on the Property Insurance page either - which to me seem to be relevant. Do you think adding more information would be beneficial to the Property Insurance page? If so would you be interested in collaborating what facts should be included? Any response would be kindly appreciated. Thank you.Lgkkitkat (talk) 16:49, 16 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I took a stab at creating a MediaWiki-style logo, inspired by a few others I saw for other WikiProjects (such as this one for WikiProject Medicine), so that we would have a nice logo for our Wikimania Leaflet. John Shandy`talk 04:39, 9 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. There are a lot of Investment related articles on Wikipedia that could use a little attention, and I hope this project can help organize an effort to improve them. So please, take a look and if you like what you see, help get this project off the ground and a few Investment pages into the front ranks of Wikipedia articles. Thanks!

Help with article?

[edit]

Hi John,

I noticed you're a member of the Wikipedia Finance and Investment project. I wonder if you'd be willing to help me out by reviewing Draft: Fifth Wall Ventures and making it live by moving it to "Wikipedia" if you think it's ready? It's a VC-firm focused on real estate with about $200m under management.

Although I am an experienced Wikipedia editor and always try my best to abide by the five pillars, in this case I have a conflict of interest, so Wikipedia policy requires that all my work be reviewed by an independent editor before it's published. I'd be glad to do any additional work you think the article requires.

Thanks for considering this!

Rejuvenate WikiProject Skepticism

[edit]

Hello - my name is Susan Gerbic (Sgerbic) and I'm writing to you because at some point you joined Wikipedia:WikiProject Skepticism. This might have been months ago - or even years ago. With the best of intentions the project was created years ago, and sadly like many WikiProjects has started to go dormant. A group of us are attempting to revitalize the Skepticism project, already we have begun to clean up the main page and I've just redone the participant page. No one is in charge of this project, it is member directed, which might have been the reason it almost went dormant. We are attempting to bring back conversations on the talk page and have two subprojects as well, in the hopes that it might spark involvement and a way of getting to know each other better. One was created several years ago but is very well organized and a lot of progress was made, Wikipedia:WikiProject Skepticism/Skeptical organisations in Europe. The other I created a couple weeks ago, it is very simple and has a silly name Wikipedia:WikiProject Skepticism/Skepticism Stub Sub-Project Project (SSSPP). This sub-project runs from March 1 to June 1, 2022. We are attempting to rewrite skepticism stubs and add them to this list. As you can see we have already made progress.

The reason I'm writing to you now is because we would love to have you come back to the project and become involved, either by working on one of the sub-projects, proposing your own (and managing it), or just hanging out on the talk page getting to know the other editors and maybe donate some of your wisdom to some of the conversations. As I said, no one is in charge, so if you have something in mind you would like to see done, please suggest it on the talk page and hopefully others will agree. Please add the project to your watchlist, update your personal user page showing you are a proud member of WikiProject Skepticism. And DIVE in, this is what the work list looks like [3] frightening at first glance, but we have already started chipping away at it.

The Wikipedia:WikiProject Skepticism/Participants page has gone though a giant change - you may want to update your information. And of course if this project no longer interests you, please remove your name from the participant list, we would hate to see you go, but completely understand.

Thank you for your time, I hope to edit with you in the future.Sgerbic (talk) 07:11, 17 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello colleague. Thank you for this article you have created. I am translating this article from beginning to end into Azerbaijani. Since my specialty is finance, this topic is particularly interesting to me. And I have a question for you. This is related to this sentence you used in the text: Europe itself experienced an influx of foreigners from 1860 to 1910, growing from 0.7% of the population to 1.8%. Here "from 0.7% of the population to 1.8%." What population do you mean? What do you mean by 0.7%? Could you please open up this sentence a bit?

And the next sentence.

While the absence of meaningful passport requirements allowed for free travel, migration on such an enormous scale would have been prohibitively difficult if not for technological advances in transportation, particularly the expansion of railway travel and the dominance of steam-powered boats over traditional sailing ships.

And what do you mean by "meaningful passport requirements"? I hesitated a bit here.

Thanks. Atakhanli (talk) 00:12, 21 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Meno25 hello colleague. you might be able to help me. thanks :) Atakhanli (talk) 21:22, 21 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Atakhanli Population: In this context, I believe the source is saying: Of the population of Europe as a whole, foreign immigrants accounted for 0.7% in 1860, but due to the increasing migration, they accounted for 1.8% by 1910.
Meaningful passport requirements: What this means is, despite that some countries may have issued passports or had some immigration policies in place, there was not effective or consistent enforcement of these requirements on people migrating around the world in that Era. Basically, nobody used to have to pass through rigorous immigration checkpoints or wait in long lines at customs back then. Since there was less enforcement or even less restrictions, people were free to move around more easily. 2601:2C0:8B01:3190:608E:855E:F8D4:C77F John Shandy`talk 01:55, 22 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for taking the time to explain. It was helpful :) Atakhanli (talk) 22:05, 21 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. I put a lot of effort into that article years ago, so I'm glad it is being translated for the benefit of non-English-speaking users. Frankly, I think it's important that the world know that the banking systems haven't really changed meaningfully since the global financial crisis and that the global financial system is still subject to pretty much the same catastrophic risk potential (unfortunately). John Shandy`talk 01:55, 22 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Colleague, could you please open this sentence a little more?
However, the golden age of this wave of globalization endured a return to protectionism between 1880 and 1914.
Is the golden age over with the start of protectionism or what? Or did the golden age continue with protectionism?
Thanks. Atakhanli (talk) 06:15, 30 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Speculations like those you made are unacceptable in general, but even moreso when discussing a living person. Please do not make comments like those again. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 13:21, 7 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@ScottishFinnishRadish To clarify, I would not support introducing content that Andrew Tate's mother Eileen ever worked as a sex worker or that she drank during pregnancy. It would fail WP:V outright since there are no sources, but even if there were sources they would need to be highly reputable, they would need to be plenty, and its relevance to the context and other stringent requirements of WP:BLP would need to be met. However, I understand the concern over speculating as to what might drop. I had put the cart before the horse. Only after the fathers turn Eileen Tate into a non-living person, will WP:BLP then no longer apply and we can just satisfy the more straightforward requirements of WP:V, provided any reliable sources emerge. Unless any do, the point is moot. John Shandy`talk 17:21, 7 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Offensive potshotting is unacceptable behavior on Wikipedia

[edit]

This is the second time, on the same article, you’ve insisted on making vulgarly misogynistic remarks that have nothing to do with the subject. This time it’s even worse because you brought up someone who has crap-all to do with Andrew Tate instead of something nominally related like his mother. Dronebogus (talk) 08:11, 16 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Dronebogus You'll have to forgive my lack of imagination when trying to come up with a recent example of another public figure adopting a meaningless nickname/title. Kari Lake is indeed unrelated to Andrew Tate, but she was the only example I could think of to make the point that what celebrities call themselves doesn't really matter and is poor justification for article redirects. I won't apologize for having a low opinion of Kari Lake, who, along with her campaign, has done plenty in the service of elevating real misogynists to deliver direct messaging in TV ads as well as to deny victory to her female opponent. I guess what I'm trying to say is... I suggest you find something else to get offended by. John Shandy`talk 09:06, 16 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This user's unblock request has been reviewed by an administrator, who accepted the request.

John Shandy` (block logactive blocksglobal blockscontribsdeleted contribsfilter logcreation logchange block settingsunblockcheckuser (log))

Request reason:

I am blocked for violating WP:BLP on the Talk page of the Andrew Tate article in February 2023, specifically for when I made offensive remarks about subjects Andrew Tate and Kari Lake in my talk page posts and my edit summaries, and then when, on my talk page, I engaged in a personal spat with the original blocking administrator after I disagreed with the decision. I was angry at the real-life living persons back during this incident, and discarded my restraint in choosing to violate BLP and post offensive and unverifiable remarks. My edits were unconstructive, and I've since realized they ultimately didn't help to improve the article or address my concerns with it. I've had over a year of indefinite block time to be away from Wikipedia, to calm and reflect. I would like to return to Wikipedia to resume my contributions to economics and finance articles, and avoid biographies of living persons altogether. I plan to continue getting economics articles up to GA or FA status. If I have a concern to raise about a BLP, I'll opt to reach out to a familiar user to see if they might care to pursue it, and then refrain from derogatory remarks. Thank you for your consideration. John Shandy`talk 20:42, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Accept reason:

With the agreement of the blocking admin, I will remove the block based on this request. Good luck. 331dot (talk) 13:37, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
