Plot Details

[edit]

The plot is currently extremely overdetailed containing elements that are only really relevant at the time they occur in-game without adding much overall. The point of a Wikipedia page is to only detail plot that's necessary to get full understanding of the overarching plot. I removed a lot of fluff, but it was just reverted so I think this needs to be discussed. I'll go over the removals I made below, please discuss this and let me know why you disagree.

- Barracuda base being (to quote) "an air-raid shelter turned into a homeless camp, counterfeit goods shopping/bidding center" makes no difference to the overall plot

- The part where it's mentioned that Yamai's men betray him and there's an assault on his hideout doesn't matter, overall. We don't need to know this to understand how the story is progressing.

- There's a lot of detail about Ebina's past that feels largely irrelevant to someone reading to get a basic understanding of the narrative. The important parts are that he resents the Yakuza and that he's Arakawa's son. Perhaps a little more could be added to what I'd trimmed it to, but it's still overly detailed

- The stuff about Eiji, the mob and being led to the police station before Kasuga is knocked out doesn't matter. All that matters is that he turns himself in

Just my two cents anyway, the plot section is far too long overall and really needs some of the fat trimming. LightSamus (talk) 01:37, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You're correct. Standard Wikipedia plot summary length is around 700 words. Scdsco (talk) 03:05, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Lightsamus
I understand the intent and why you want to trimmed it down, but to me personally, some of the details are important because it is part of the story itself. No offense, but some of your edits read of someone who hasn't played the game. RGG games rely a lot on exposition and convolutence, so I sought out to include most of the relevant details. Some are unneeded in restropect yes, like the District Five being a former air-raid shelter turned to counterfeit shopping center, I get that, but I believe most of what I add is plot relevant.
That said, things like Ebina's past or Yamai's men betraying him, that was plot relevant. The whole reason the plot starts is because Arakawa loved Ichiban's mother Akane, the Hikawa Family hunting her, and he massacring them in return, causing the patriarch's daughter who Arakawa initially marry, gave birth to Ebina without Arakawa knowing she was pregnant. That was explained in detail in the story and the reason why Ebina went on this long revenge quest. Same thing with Yamai: The whole reason Ichiban is in Hawaii is to meet Akane, so Yamai informing Ichi that his men betrayed him for Palekana and they're going after his mom, that is still plot relevant so removing it feels wrong. Furthermore, the excessive removal resulting in characters like Hanawa having zero mentions before saying that he's dead, that's just poor summarization.
Which also leads to my personal belief: You can't really simplify this plot summary any further. Again, most of the plot details that I added prior to you changing them back are relevant., It's part of the main themes of the story. When you have a story this convoluted with many layers to it, I think it should be elaborated even a bit. I also disagree with Scdsco here that 700 words is enough, no it isn't, it should be as long as it needs to be, and for the Yakuza games and some other games, it should be more than 700 because it can't deliver the plot summary justice. Besides it's not fully enforced anyway that 700 should be the plot limit so I don't understand why for this particular game there's the need to overly simplify the plot. Yes it's long, but it's a necessary evil to explain the plot.
I know inevitably there's going to be a middle ground for this, but to me personally, I don't think we should simplify the story any further. We should leave the one currently had, re-add some details, or revert to my fix because IMO it's the best one balancing length and detail, maybe fix one or two plot details along the way, and leave it at that. That's just me. DarryLaz (talk) 04:23, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I hear you, but there's too much. Stop re-adding deleted stuff, MORE needs to be removed, not less. If you want a full in-depth analysis of the plot, use the Yakuza wiki or whatever instead. LightSamus (talk) 14:59, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You're not even justifying half of your removals other than "it needs to be shorter". Even after I point out the plot relevancy of the things you delete, the things that SHOULD be included as a plot summary, you just don't listen, you just want to shorten it no matter the cost.
Whatever man, I'm not in the mood of arguing, but IMO the plot segment needs to be informative, not restrictive. What you're doing is the latter, forcefully cramming the huge plot just to fit a quota that isn't even enforced properly, that doesn't sit right with me, especially since other wiki pages of other games were of similar if not longer length yet not one having this pointless of an argument like we're doing now.
If you keep insisting shortening and butchering it, go ahead, but I'm done arguing. This should not be an issue to start with. DarryLaz (talk) 17:40, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
