Bureau of Land Management

Government Administration

BLM manages one in every 10 acres of land in U.S. encompassing forests, mountains, rangelands, arctic tundra and deserts

About us

The BLM manages more land – 256 million surface acres – than any other Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The Bureau, with a budget of about $1 billion, also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM’s multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, and cultural resources on the public lands. In 2021, join us in celebrating our 75th anniversary! Learn more: https://www.blm.gov/about/history/75th-anniversary. #ReImaginePublicLands #PublicLands75

Wilderness provides unparalleled opportunities for spending time outdoors in beautiful landscapes where you can discover solitude, recreation, and personal reflection. California's Yuki Wilderness is a beautiful place filled with ponderosa pine, douglas fir, Shasta red fir, white fir, and incense cedar. Several rare animals are also known to live in the area like marten, goshawk, the northern spotted owl, and prairie falcon! 📸 Jesse Pluim #WildernessMonth #WildernessWednesday

"Sound is the vocabulary of nature." Pierre Schaeffer Ever heard of acoustic bird monitoring? It's using audio equipment to collect wildlife sound. This data can be used in animal behavior studies to monitor and inform species conservation and help conduct wildlife inventory. In Alaska, we're using this technology to better understand the migratory patterns of birds to help better inform decisions on public lands. 🐦 Check out our latest podcast to learn more ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gHWJ6i4S. 🎧

It's time to lace up those boots and grab your work gloves—National Public Lands Day is calling! 🌲 This isn’t just another Saturday; it’s the day we come together to strengthen the places that connect us all. National Public Lands Day is about more than volunteering- it’s about building community, removing barriers to access, and ensuring our public lands remain vibrant spaces for everyone to enjoy. That’s why we’re teaming up with the National Environmental Education Foundation to unite communities around the shared goal of preserving our public lands. Whether you’re planting trees, restoring habitats, or joining in some hands-on learning, there’s a way for everyone to make an impact and safeguard these spaces for future generations.
