Krishnakant agrees to assist her, and summons about a dozen of his fellow officers and subordinates to assist him. They all assemble at Devdurg with all the necessary ammunitions and arms to combat Jageera, not realizing that Jageera has influence over the local police detachment, who will prevent Puri and his men to possess any guns and weapons. This does not deter Puri and his men, and they continue to stay on in Devdurg and gain the confidence of the villagers. What the villagers do not know that Krishnakant and his men had all been dishonorably discharged from the army for cowardice and retreating when attacked by the enemy. Will Puri and his men abandon Devdurg and let history repeat itself?—rAjOo (gunwanti@hotmail.com)
- The story begins with Col. Krishnakant Puri (Om Puri) and his ten men who were sacked from the Indian Army for failing in the China Gate mission. Krishnakant lives an alienated life after the Court-martial. Frustrated, one day he is about to commit suicide when a young lady named Sandhya (Mamta Kulkarni) knocks on his door. Having witnessed the brutal slaying of her Forest Officer father, Sunder Rajan (Girish Karnad), at the hands of dreaded robber Jageera (Mukesh Tiwari), Sandhya goes to the Col. and asks for his assistance in bringing an end to Jageera's rule in the Devdurg region. Col. Krishnakant agrees to assist her and summons ten of his fellow officers and subordinates to assist him in this mission. Colonel Keval Krishan Puri (Amrish Puri), Major Sarfaraz Khan (Naseeruddin Shah), Major Ranjir Singh Gurung (Danny Denzongpa), Major Kulbhushan Gupta (Kulbhushan Kharbanda), Captain B'John (Tinu Anand), Havaldar Ghanshyam (Viju Khote), Subedar Ramaiyah (Jagdeep), Pandey/DK (Anjan Srivastav) and Udit "Uditanshu" Tandon (Samir Soni) (son of Major Tandon)
Gopinath is Village Sarpanch (Shivaji Satam) and Gopinath's wife (Ila Arun). Inspector Barot (Paresh Rawal) is the inspector in the village area. Sunder had made a trap to capture Jageera, but someone informed Jageera to who attacked the village instead of walking into the trap. Sunder risked his life to call for help, but was decapitated by Jageera as none of the villagers had the courage to help him. Sunder was Col Krishnakant's friend and hence Sandhya turned to him as her last hope.
Keval is a security head at a ship scrapyard. Gurung is suffering from cancer. Kulbhushan has a property dispute with local mafia and his family is against him. Pandey is being ill-treated at home by his daughter-in-law. They all gather at Krishna's house, but rebuff his plan as they are all old and Jageera is a notorious robber. Khulbhushan is the only one with money and Krishna wants him to fund the mission. Kulbhushan agrees when Krishna informs everyone that the payout on killing Jageera is Rs 1 Crore 26 Lakhs, which means a payout of Rs 10 Lakhs each after deducting Kulbhushan's expenses.
Only Gurung & Sarfaraz are with Krishna unwavering and later Udit. On the morning of the departure, everyone gathers at the train station and the mission proceeds. Keval is not very fond of Sarfaraz (as he is a Muslim). Meanwhile Jageera has entered the village again and killed Gopinath for collaborating with Sunder. They assemble at Devdurg with the necessary ammunition and arms to combat Jageera. Gurung conducts surveillance of the nearby areas and finds a detachment of the robbers hidden in the hills. The villagers do not know that Krishnakant and his men had been dishonorably discharged from the army for cowardice. At the time of the first encounter with the gang of Jageera, the team of Krishnakant realized that they are out of shape and have lost instincts and fighting capabilities due to age. With the permission of Col. Krishnakant, Major Gurung starts to train them again.
Soon Jageera finds out about the mission and send his men to attack the village. Gurung and Sarfaraz defend the village and everyone else caves in. At the debrief serious fault lines emerge in the group. Keval blames Krishna for the failure of China Gate mission 17 yrs ago. Gurung points out that Keval didn't follow orders in the robbers firing. Sarfaraz points out 17 yrs ago Keval asked everyone to jump in the river and was the first one to do so. Keval and Sarfaraz draw weapons at each other when again Keval insults Muslims.
Krishna clarifies that 17 yrs ago he was ordered to attack a terrorist hideout, but he saw women and children at the designated address. Which is why he stopped Keval from proceeding with the blast. He thought intelligence gave them the wrong address and ordered a retreat, but terrorists emerged from the basement and attacked. He admits that he fought for 17 yrs to get his men justice, while they all went ahead with their lives. He also says he never knew Sandhya's father and is only there to regain his lost glory and so is everyone else.
The team continue to stay on in Devdurg. But now the villagers decide to ask Krishna's men to leave, but the women stand up and ask the men to stay and protect the village. Jageera has influence over the local police Ins Barot, who prevents Krishnakant and his men to possess any guns and weapons. Sarfaraz saves Keval's life on patrol and Keval tells him how Muslims killed his family during partition. Sarfaraz tells his story of how he lost his family during Meerut riots at the hands of Hindus.
One day, Jageera captures them with the help of corrupt police officer Barot (Sandhya was afraid of more deaths and had written to the DM to take the army-men away from the village, but Barot intercepted the letter and used it to deliver the men to Jageera), but they escape finally and in turn capture Jageera with the help of Sandhya, who arrive with ammunition at the opportune time. Sarfaraz gambles his life to capture Jageera single handed.
Col Krishan Puri and few officers intend to kill him, but leader Col. Puri hands him over to the police inspector Barot. As a result (since Barot is under corrupt influence of Jageera), Jageera is again set free and kills Maj. Sarfaraj (he traps Sarfaraz in a lonely location and then mercilessly shoots him and later scalps him).
Jageera captures the village and puts all women and children in a building and rigs it with explosives. Now the full team of Col. Krishnakant along with the villagers make a plan to defeat Jageera. They attack from all sides and a fierce gun battle ensues. Gurung saves the building rigged with explosives and frees the women and kids. Many army-men die at the hands of the robbers. Eventually Jageera is left alone and Krishna chases him to the exact spot where Jageera killed Sarfaraz. Krishna decapitates Jageera with Sarfaraz's weapon. In response the Govt of India expunges their court martial and gives them an honorable discharge. Udit married Sandhya and joins the army.
