Paramount released a new trailer for “Gladiator II” on Monday, the long-awaited sequel to Ridley Scott’s 2001 Best Picture winner.
As previously teased in the first trailer and now confirmed with this latest bit of marketing, the new film focuses on Lucius (Paul Mescal), the son of Maximus (played in the original film by Russell Crowe). That’s a twist of sorts on the “Gladiator” canon, as in the original film Maximus had a previous relationship with Lucius’s mother, Lucilla (Connie Nielsen), but it wasn’t made explicitly clear if Lucius was their child. In “Gladiator II,” Lucius is captured as a prisoner of war following a battle that leaves his wife dead and forced to fight in gladiator battles as the main “tool” of Macrinus (Denzel Washington). Meanwhile, Macrinus is trying to consolidate power and take over Rome from its current awful emperors (played...

Tom Cruise might be the king of death-defying stunts, but even he knows his limits—well, sometimes. In a career full of heart-stopping moments, from hanging off planes to scaling skyscrapers, there’s one scene that left even Cruise tapping out. Yep, this one stunt was so extreme it was deemed impossible to shoot without risking a trip to the great beyond.
Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One | Paramount Pictures
And we’re not talking about some CGI extravaganza—this was supposed to be the real deal, but physics and common sense got in the way. Despite his adrenaline-junkie reputation, Cruise couldn’t pull this one off, leaving fans to wonder what could’ve been the most epic and expensive stunt sequence in cinema history. Even Ethan Hunt had to say no!

Many would surely agree with the argument that Meryl Streep is the best actor ever. Having made her stage debut in 1975, the Yale School of Drama alum already had two Oscar nominations to her name by 1980, even winning the Best Supporting Actress award for "Kramer vs. Kramer." You can't get a more auspicious start in Hollywood than that, and to Streep's credit, she managed to maintain her momentum throughout the next decade, receiving a further six Oscar nominations and scoring a Best Actress win for 1982's "Sophie's Choice." That's a remarkable achievement considering the actress had made her feature film debut just five years prior in 1977's "Julia."
Perhaps the only thing more impressive than Streep's almost instantaneous domination of Hollywood is the fact that she has remained just as esteemed as her career played out. Almost 50 years after her film debut, Streep is still one of the most respected actors in the game,...

At this stage, it seems as though Denzel Washington can do no wrong. The man is a Hollywood legend, proving he can take on everything from action blockbuster franchises to thoughtful indie dramas and deliver. If his "Equalizer" movies aren't for you, there's always the expressionist nightmare that is Joel Coen's "The Tragedy Of Macbeth," in which, as /Film's review surmised, Denzel was "ferocious," threatening to "rip that Oscar right out of the throat of the Academy with his bare teeth."

Actor Denzel Washington seldom rewatched his own critically acclaimed dramas and high-grossing blockbusters. But he made an exception for one of his features in large part because of his son.

Washington is known for his great body of film work. And if he was to look back on his filmography, he’d have every reason to be proud of his contributions to cinema. Many of his films have drawn hundreds of millions of dollars and enjoyed numerous praise and accolades. But he’s always asserted that he never rewatches his past work. When Rsng once asked Washington what his favorite movie was, he simply responded it was always the next movie he hadn’t done yet.
“That is my answer to that,” Washington said. “I’m interested in the choosing, I’m interested in finding the character, I’m interested in the process.

Denzel Washington is proud of his children. Why wouldn’t he be? His youngest son, Malcolm Washington, just premiered his directorial debut with an adaptation of August Wilson’s play, “The Piano Lesson,” which he co-wrote with Virgil Williams. In addition, the film stars his Denzel’s eldest son, John David Washington, with his sister Katia serving as executive producer and Malcolm’s twin sister Olivia, also having a role in the movie.
Washington has been designated the custodian of Wilson’s legacy by Constanza Romero, and with it, he has an overall deal with Netflix to produce all of Wilson’s 10-play Pittsburgh Cycle, also known as “The Century Cycle.” Set across several decades of the 20th century, it chronicles the experience and heritage of the African American community.

Ray Fisher ignites the screen as Lymon, the best friend of lead character Boy Willie Charles, played by John David Washington, in Netflix’s period drama “The Piano Lesson.” His portrayal has even sparked some early Oscar buzz.
Fisher’s last few years have been challenging following his public dispute with “Justice League” director Joss Whedon and former DC Films president Walter Hamada. But this project offers Fisher a chance to move forward.
“What helped this entire process is, I’ve got to give it up to August Wilson,” Fisher said during an interview at the Variety Studio, sponsored by J.Crew and SharkNinja, at the Toronto International Film Festival. “The juxtaposition that existed within the piece, within the character. I think there’s a little of Lymon Jackson in all of us. There’s an innocence about him in this piece that many lose as time passes, especially when you endure such hardship.

The first time I saw Christopher Walken on-screen was as villainous industrialist Max Shreck in Tim Burton's "Batman Returns." That performance stayed with me simply because Walken seemed to play quietly menacing with as much ease as Jack Nicholson plays unhinged. That is to say that villainy seemed to come a little too easily to Walken, who throughout Burton's nightmare expressionist fairytale discovered new facets of odiousness with each successive scene.
32 years after "Batman Returns" debuted, however, Walken's filmography clearly speaks to the man's range. Walken is great at playing villains, but he's proven over the decades that he's capable of so much more. From his role as Frank Abagnale Sr. in Steven Spielberg's "Catch Me If You Can" — for which he was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar — to his portrayal of Corporal Nikanor Chevotarevich in Michael Cimino's "The Deer Hunter" — for which he...

Triumph, starring and produced by Maria Bakalova, a 2021 Oscar acting nominee for Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, will be Bulgaria‘s International Feature Film submission for the 2025 Academy Awards.
The darkly comedic movie by award-winning Bulgarian filmmakers Kristina Grozeva and Petar Valchanov was selected after a unanimous vote by the country’s selection committee ahead of Triumph‘s world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival later this week.
Grozeva and Valchanov’s previous film, The Father, which featured a cameo by Bakalova, became Bulgaria’s 2021 International Oscar entry after winning the Grand Prix at the 2019 Karlovy Vary Film Festival.
Triumph is the last part of a movie trilogy by Grozeva and Valchanov that includes the 2014 The Lesson, also a TIFF selection, and 2016’s Glory. Why does Morgan Freeman, our beloved cinematic sage, sport those iconic gold hoop earrings? While some might think it’s merely a quirky fashion choice, there’s a fascinating, slightly morbid reason behind them that leaves us both admiring & chuckling in the same breath.
Morgan Freeman in Hard Rain | Credit: Paramount Pictures
As the man who’s delivered breathtaking performances in Glory, Se7en, Unforgiven, and The Dark Knight trilogy, Freeman has clearly ascended to the pinnacle of A-list stardom. But back to the gold hoops—these aren’t just bling for the bling’s sake. Freeman revealed in a 2019 Instagram post that these gleaming accessories are worth just enough for someone “to buy me a coffin if I die in a strange place”.
Just like the brave sailors and roguish pirates of yesteryear, Freeman’s got his bases covered, ensuring he can rest in peace wherever his life adventures might lead him.

Denzel Washington has consistently delivered standout performances — including as a director in recent years! — across his decades-long career. He already has two Oscars to his name and could be on his way to a third Academy Award with his role in Ridley Scott‘s “Gladiator II.”

Denzel Washington is about as accomplished an actor as you can get. Not only does the man exude effortless on-screen charisma in a way few others have, he's proven he can play pretty much anything you throw at him. From an unstoppable action hero in the "Equalizer" movies to a troubled, brooding Shakespearean general in the expressionist nightmare that was Joel Cohen's "The Tragedy of Macbeth," Denzel can simply do it all.
Now, it seems Washington will make yet another big impression in "Gladiator 2," with the actor set to play Macrinus, a power broker and arms dealer who aids Paul Mescal's Lucius Verus II in his quest to topple Rome. It should be yet another triumph for Washington, who no matter what he's in, seems like one of the safest bets a director can make.

French director Claude Lelouch will be celebrated with the Cartier Glory To The Filmmaker Award at the upcoming 81st Venice Film Festival, running from August 28 to September 7.
He follows in the footsteps of Wes Anderson who was last year’s recipient of the award, dedicated to a personality who has made a particularly original contribution to the contemporary film industry.
The award ceremony will take place on September 2 ahead of the world premiere in an Out of Competition screening of Lelouch’s new work Finalement, starring an ensemble cast featuring Kad Merad, Elsa Zylberstain, Michel Boujenah, Sandrine Bonnaire, Barbara Pravi and Françoise Gillard.
One of France’s best loved directors, Lelouch first broke out internationally with his 1966 Oscar and Cannes Palme d’Or-winning romance A Man and a Woman, starring Anouk Aimee and Jean-Louis Trintignant as a widow and widower whose fledgling love story is held back by past personal tragedies.

"Tombstone" may now be considered one of the most beloved Westerns of the late twentieth century, but the film had an incredibly rocky path from the page to the big screen. "Tombstone" was intended to be the directorial debut of "Glory" screenwriter Kevin Jarre, but when he fell behind schedule a month into the shoot, producer Andrew Vajna fired him and brought in veteran helmer George P. Cosmatos ("Rambo: First Blood Part II" and "Leviathan") to ostensibly drag the movie to the finish line.
We've since learned that, after Jarre's departure, the driving creative force on "Tombstone" was star Kurt Russell. Cast as legendary lawman Wyatt Earp, Russell brought a semblance of order to the wayward production by streamlining the lengthy screenplay with producer Jim Jacks. His instincts proved plenty sharp. By foregrounding the unlikely friendship forged between Earp and the tuberculosis-stricken gambler/gunman Doc Holliday (Val Kilmer in one...

During the peak of her career, Britney Spears worked with the Black Eyed Peas’ Will.i.am and created one of her worst songs ever. Somehow, that led to more collaborations between Spears and the rapper that took the “Womanizer” singer‘s career in the wrong direction. While the press has become more sympathetic to Spears, her career never recovered from those Will.i.am collaborations.
Britney Spears and Will.i.am made 1 of the worst songs of the 2010s together
Both during his time with the Black Eyed Peas and his solo career, Will.i.am wrote many vapid, annoying songs. Many of those vapid, annoying songs were very successful. Regardless, as the 2010s wore on, Will. i.am’s sound seemed more and more passe. Sadly, Spears worked with him during this period.

Few military regiments are better known than the 54th Massachusetts, thanks to Ed Zwick’s brilliant 1989 film Glory. Based on the letters of Colonel Robert Gould Shaw and the books Lay This Laurel (1973) by Lincoln Kirstein and One Gallant Rush (1965) by Peter Burchard, the screenwriter Kevin Jarre humanizes the black men who volunteered to fight for the union, most of whom died in battle.
When released, the movie was revelatory, catapulting Denzel Washington to the Hollywood A list with his Academy Award-winning performance as Private Silas Trip. He was surrounded by a strong supporting cast led by Andre Braugher and Morgan Freeman. As Shaw, Matthew Broderick completed his journey from heartthrob Ferris Bueller to an accomplished adult actor.
