With cannibalism being strictly verboten, most filmmakers understandably approach the topic with gravity. Meanwhile, Fabrice Eboué’s Some Like It Rare (originally Barbaque) prefers to be irreverent. The only overcooked thing about this French comedy is maybe a piece of meat. There are more laughs than thrills here, yet it’s the distinct and effective sense of humor that makes the grisly subject matter all the more palatable.
This delicious slab of laughs begins with the central characters being dealt another setback in life; vegan activists vandalize their butcher shop. The damage ruins most of the meat products, and even worse, the culprits are never arrested. Sophie Pascal (Marina Foïs) was already unhappy with her marriage, and now she has to face the possibility of going bankrupt. Soon after she asks her husband Vincent (Eboué) for a separation, he hastily runs over one of the vegans who ruined their shop.

"It's so delicious, is it really pork?" Brainstorm Media has revealed an official US trailer for an indie dark comedy horror film from France titled Some Like It Rare, though the French title is much more amusing: Barbaque. This premiered at genre festivals last year and is finally getting an Alamo Drafthouse theatrical release in October before it lands on VOD. When a struggling butcher accidentally kills a vegan activist, he uses his skills to dispose of the body… to the delight of his clueless customers. After 30 years of marriage, their marriage bed is as alive as the sausages in the counter. Love, business - nothing works out. Until they discover a new type of meat they can offer… Yet another cannibalism film out this year on top of Fresh and Bones and All, oh boy. Starring Fabrice Éboué, Marina Foïs, Jean-Francois Cayrey, Lisa Do Couto Texeira, Victor Meutelet, Stephane Soo Mongo,...

Fantaspoa 2022 Announced: "After two years of successful online editions, the 18th edition of the beloved Brazilian genre festival Fantaspoa will return to the cinemas from April 15th through May 1st. This year, attendees will discover a very different Fantaspoa from its last on-site edition (a very distant 2019): instead of its usual two venues, the fest will take place simultaneously in five cinemas, with part of its program also being available online, geo-blocked for viewers within Brazil.
The poster for this year’s festival was conceived by the festival’s art director Thalles Mourão, with the drawing from local artist Fernanda Moreira. The striking image is a mashup of two centenary anniversaries: The Modern Art Week, one of Brazil’s greatest art movements, and F. W. Murnau’s 1922 masterpiece of cinema, Nosferatu: A Symphony Of Horror.
Nosferatu will also have a very special screening on the opening night of the festival,...

Vegans are on the menu in a lightweight French black comedy that could do with a little more meat on its bones
This grisly black comedy will do nothing to dispel the old cliche about France being a nation of steak-frites-devouring meat-eaters. It’s the story of husband-and-wife butchers who become serial killers – making vegans into mincemeat, literally. It is a slight, lightweight film, gruesomely hilarious in places, with one or two echoes of the Coen brothers’ Fargo.
Giving nicely deadpan performances, Marina Foïs and director Fabrice Eboué play unhappily married butchers Sophie and Vincent, who are looking down the barrel of bankruptcy and divorce when they accidentally kill a vegan activist. Naturally, they dispose of his body using the tools of their trade. But then Sophie unwittingly puts the human meat on the shelves – and it’s an instant hit with customers (“I’ve never tasted anything like it!

The story of butchers serving up human flesh which tastes to good that nobody can resist it goes back at least four centuries. It reached its peak in the UK in 1846 when penny dreadfuls circulated the legend of Sweeney Todd, but in France most people think first of a story about St Nicholas, who is said to have saved the souls of some unfortunate children done away with in that fashion. Although films on the subject are commonplace, France hasn’t produced one since 1990’s Delicatessen, and whilst this doesn’t come close to the magic of Jeunet et Caro, it’s a little classier than what most cannibal films fans will be used to – even if its characters are not.
Vincent (Fabrice Eboué) is the butcher at the centre of this story: a friendly, unassuming guy who is just trying to make his way in life and gradually running his.

French sales companies are getting behind Mia’s film and TV market in Rome this week.

Amazon Prime Video has boarded Melanie Laurent’s anticipated period mystery thriller “Le bal des folles” as its first Original movie in France.
“Le bal des folles” is produced by Alain Goldman and Axelle Boucaï at Legende Films. Amazon Prime Video will launch the film exclusively in France and around the world in 2021.
The movie will start shooting next week in Rochefort, in western France. Penned by Laurent and Christophe Deslandes, “Le bal des folles” is based on the award-wining novel of the same name by Victoria Mas.
The film takes place at the end of the 19th century in Paris, at a time when women deemed too rebellious or difficult were frequently labeled as insane and institutionalized. The action unfolds at the Salpêtrière hospital where such women, diagnosed with different kinds of nervous system disorders, were confined and put under the supervision of neurologists such as Jean-Martin Charcot. Poor box office performance of English-language slate, including Miss Sloane and The Circle, to blame.
Luc Besson’s mini-major EuropaCorp has posted a company record losses of $136m (€119.9m) for the 2016-17 financial year.
In a statement released in Paris on Wednesday morning (July 28), the company said consolidated revenue rose 3% to $171m (€151.7m) but net operating cash flows had fallen dramatically to $2.7m (€2.4m) for 2016-17, down from $92m (€81m) in the previous financial year.
The slight increase in consolidated revenue had been driven by foreign sales and an increase in Svod and TV sales to the Us, EuropaCorp said.
EuropaCorp had already officially announced in February that the company would post losses in 2016-17 that were “substantially higher” than losses in previous financial years. The company did not give further details but local media and entertainment analysts suggested a figure of around €35m ($39m).
