So much is so wrong about The Dark Tower, the stunted film version of Stephen King's marvelously dense and dazzling series of eight novels, that it's hard to know where to kick off a critical reckoning. The crux of the problem is that the bestselling author's magnum opus deserves an open-ended miniseries treatment, akin to what HBO has done with Game of Thrones or Peter Jackson's treatment of the magnificent cinematic trilogy Lord of the Rings.

Production continues apace on the New York set of Warner Bros. and Nikolaj Arcel’s The Dark Tower, the long-awaited adaptation of Stephen King’s celebrated sci-fi fantasy series.
Only a few months ago, the first wave of set photos surfaced online, placing Luther star Idris Elba in the shoes of Roland Deschain (Aka The Gunslinger). Elba’s stoic lead will be one half of the movie’s leading duo, with Matthew McConaughey picking up the other mantle as the infamous Man in Black.
This is our first good look at the wanderer known as Randall Flagg, with McConaughey donning a long, jet-black jacket and dyed hair to match. Mysterious and oddly powerful, the Man in Black is an instrumental part of The Dark Tower series, and McConaughey’s undisputed talent and intensity ought to make for an unmissable watch.

It’s a sentence that we here at We Got This Covered have wanted to pen for an awful long time: Warner Bros’ long-gestating adaptation of The Dark Tower has finally entered production.
To prove it, British tabloid The Daily Mail has unearthed a pair of photos from the film’s set in Cape Town, South Africa, showcasing Idris Elba in costume as Roland Deschain (Aka The Gunslinger). Both snaps can be viewed after the jump.

While one still teases a green screen backdrop set against an appropriately rusty, dilapidated set, it’s really Elba’s get up as the famed Gunslinger that will pique the interest of fans. Blinking into the sunlight, the Luther star can be seen sporting one of the Sandalwood guns, tucked away safely in a holster.

There are admittedly few better ways to open an engagingly grimy and gory adventure show about the ninth century Viking invasion of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms than with the title card: “Special Guest Star Rutger Hauer.” Not that you should get too enamored of the ubiquitous Dutch actor’s role as Ravn, a Viking poet and wise man with a rockin’ face tattoo who is something of the doomed Obi Wan Kenobi to this new BBC America series’ real protagonist. That would be Uhtred of Bebbanburg, played by Tom Taylor as a Luke Skywalker-esque youth and Alexander Dreymon as a
