Prakash Deka (aka Pranjal Deka) is a filmmaker based out of Mumbai. Prakash's debut feature film as a Writer, Director, Producer , Costume Designer and Art Director, called 'Fireflies-Jonaki Porua' (2020) won a National Award in the 67th National Films Award (2021). The film also bagged the Best Film award at the 8th Assam State Film Awards (including Best Costume, Best Music Direction and Best Actor), apart from several awards in reputed film festivals across the globe. Making history as the first queer feminist feature film from Assam, Fireflies-Jonaki Porua has been invited for special screenings in reputed film festivals as well as universities, and has received overwhelmingly positive reviews from academics, activists as well as general audience. The film has also been chosen as doctoral research subject in prestigious universities researching on impactful queer cinemas of the world.
Prakash's second feature film called "The Woodcutter" as a writer, director and producer, the post production for which has neared completion was selected to the prestigious NFDC Screenwriters Lab 2021 through a highly competitive process. Two feature film projects written by Prakash - one called "Laltu" (Hindi feature, based on slum children) is on pre-production, and the other called "Broken Arrow" (Assamese feature, based on immigration from Bangladesh to the Northeast) is soon to be released. Prakash was also the casting director for Fireflies-Jonaki Porua, The Woodcutter and another critically acclaimed Assamese feature film called Soul of Silence, apart from being the production designer for both Fireflies-Jonaki Porua and The Woodcutter. The Woodcutter is now gearing up for its festival run.
