Diana Mae Vickers (born 30 July 1991 in Lancashire, England) is a British singer-songwriter and actress[1] currently best known for her appearances on the ITV television programme The X Factor in 2008.
Early years and education
Vickers was born on 30 July 1991 in Accrington, Lancashire, England. She studied for A Levels in Theatre Studies, Classics, and Psychology.[2]. Vickers had taken many singing lessons and participated in local competitions, but had never sung professionally.[3] Her plan was to go to Drama School to study Musical Theatre.[4]
The X Factor
Vickers was a contestant in the 2008 series of The X Factor[4]. Her performances were often unconventional, attracting both praise and criticism as a result - judge Simon Cowell likened her to Marmite, saying that fans could either love or hate her singing[5]. She courted further controversy when she was unable to perform during week 5 of the contest due to illness[6]. She reached week 9 of the contest, achieving fourth place[7].

Post X Factor
Vickers performed at the X Factor Live tour, in which she sang two of her X Factor Songs: Patience, by Take That and Call Me by Blondie. On the 14 March 2009 whilst performing in the Birmingham LG Arena, Vickers' performance of Call Me was interrupted by Ant and Dec for their show Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway.[9]
Vickers performed at Hamilton Park Racecourse on Saturday 11 July 2009 alongside JLS and Ruth Lorenzo where she sang Dido's 'White Flag', U2's 'With or Without You', Michael Jackson's 'Man in the Mirror' and Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah' all of which she had performed previously during her time on the X Factor. Furthermore, Vickers went on to sing Beyoncé's 'Halo' before performing a duet of Snow Patrol's 'Run' with Ruth Lorenzo.
Debut album and West End debut
It was originally announced that Vickers would be signed up by Sony BMG under the Syco label but this plan was later dropped.[10] Vickers has since been signed to the RCA label[11] and whilst being interviewed at the premiere of 17 Again, Vickers confirmed that she had begun work on her debut album. Vickers commented that it wouldn't be rushed and that it would be "Diana style". Vickers has been working with Chris Braide[12],Nerina Pallot[13] and former X Factor contestant, Ruth Lorenzo as well as Patrick Wolf[14] and Dev Hynes, aka Lightspeed Champion.[13] They have been asked to pen tracks, and Guy Sigsworth and Chris Braide are set to produce the album.[14] Vickers' debut album is expected to be released in early 2010.[15] The album is now listed as a forthcoming release on the HMV website[16] and is also available for pre-order on the Play website.[17]
'This young girl is a natural actress. The moment she read the part, it was magic. A frisson ran through the room. Diana Vickers is the real deal. She is Little Voice.[18] "
— Jim Cartwright whilst commenting on Diana Vickers
Vickers is due to make her professional acting debut in the title role of a new West End production of Jim Cartwright's The Rise and Fall of Little Voice in the autumn of 2009.[15][19] Vickers plays the shy and lonely Laura, who hides an astonishing talent as an impersonator of singers such as Shirley Bassey.[18] The play will be revived to run at London's Vaudeville theatre from Thursday, 8 October 2009.[20]
Vickers will be taking a break from recording her debut album to star in the production.[20]
