Don’t let his name fool you — the newest arrival in National City is not going to be a fun time for the Girl of Steel.
Nick Sagar, better known to Shadowhunters fans as the duplicitous Victor Aldertree, will recur in Supergirl‘s fifth season as Rip Roar, “a multi-armed, technologically enhanced villain who goes toe to toe with [Kara],” TVLine has learned exclusively. He’ll make his first appearance during Sunday’s episode (The CW, 9/8c).
In addition to Freeform’s Shadowhunters, Sagar’s TV credits include roles on OWN’s The Haves and the Have Nots, USA Network’s Queen of the South, and CBS’ NCIS: Los Angeles. He also famously starred opposite Vanessa Hudgens in Netflix’s The Princess Switch; a sequel, titled The Princess Switch: Switched Again was recently ordered for release in 2020.
In other Season 5 casting news, last week’s episode marked Mehcad Brooks’ final appearance as a series regular. Following an eye-opening visit to his hometown, James — sorry, make that “Jimmy” — decided to buy the local newspaper and use the power of the press to turn things around. It’s now looking unlikely that Brooks will be around for Jeremy Jordan’s return as Winn Schott, which is also expected to happen at some point this season.

The lack of Crisis tie-in and the glacial pace they’re going at is making this a dud season for me. Plus it feels like everyone is phoning it in, writers, directors, actors, etc. It’s like no one cares anymore who’s making the show, so why should I?
Are you ever not off here?
I have a very boring job in front of a computer in a place that is dead most of the time. There are filters so I can’t watch movies or tv. I get bored, sue me. How are you today?
Last season started off slow too but picked up as the season went along until by the time Lex Luthor arrived it was the best season ever, and the best show on the CW that season.
Agreed. It took forever for the Red Daughter story to kick in but when it did… wow, good stuff. My only complaint is we didn’t see Red Daughter enough. I am curious about the power Supergirl gained when Red Daughter and she merged back into one.
Yeah, I kind of wonder if Supergirl shot her load taking on Lex Luthor. She had purple heat vision against Lex. But is now back to blue heat vision,
She is totally getting sidelined in the crossover again. Hate that that happens, but she always seems like an extra in these things.
Sidelined is probably a good thing given what happens to Supergirl in the source material. The crisis events so far are centred around other Earths anyway.
Yep, the season has been on autopilot.
Very good – look forward to see him as Rip Roar.
I don’t watch Supergirl, but loved Nick Sagar in Queen of the South!
Last week when the showed the previews for this week, my ears perked up when I heard Rip Roar. I was a little surprised he looked more Dr. Octopus tmfrom Spider-Man than the 4 armed muscle new god from DC. But SG typically puts a new spin on things and this better ties to the technology theme.
The CGI clip that went viral on Twitter is hilarious for all the wrong reasons.
The show has gotten quite boring imo. I miss the quality of the first two seasons.
Because its a red dot. That went viral on a Picasso. You should watch the planatarium scene it has great CGI. Every show has a red dot.
S5 so far…
The SG showrunners have two speeds super slow and super fast, no inbetween. The pay offs tends to outway the frustration thanks to the talented cast. I was hoping this season would have a snappier pace as we should have somewhat distinct pre- and post- Crisis stories but that it not the case it seems as we are at episode 5 and only a small wink to Crisis in the season premiere and no direct mention of Leviathan despite eager to please AI Hope merging with Eve… you’d think she’d be blabbing on a out it to Lena. But, fans have learned patience.
On the positive note, the black hole sequence and last week’s aerial stunt with SG catching a bullet in flight and using her heat vision to dearm an agent was cool, as was the villian taking SG’s breath away and seeing the girl of steel turn blue and back again after getting the upper hand. I also love the new suit, although I liked the old one. I do wish Brainy explained it a bit more.
The negative side is too much romance at once. Seeing both Alex and Brainy preoccupied with their respective new loves is way too much to being happening simultaneously. Brainy and Nia seems most believable and organic to the show. Alex’s is more perplexing and annoying. I like Kelly and have no problem with her being the new love interest but they need to put on the brakes and let it happened at a not so fast pace. Alex is head of the DEO and should be better at compartmentalizing her personal feelings and seeing the big picture situation. She comes across whiney and week and that is not Alex. Last week when she tore into Brainy hysterical because the phantom zone gun didnt hold Ma’alef’ak because he is after “her Kelly” was hard to stomach. Again, I am for “Ally” but not at the expense of sacrificing Alex’s character and her rationale at the DEO.
Lena… they are making a mistake making Lena’s turn and irrational behavior be based solely on feeling betrayed by Kara. She presumably murdered her brother and that she be weighing heavily on her and explain her actions. After all she doesn’t know the Monitor may have resurrected him.
I thought this post didnt take… so I repeated myself below… my bad. There’s a killer pop up Kit Kat ad that’s driving me nuts… LOL
The showrunner only know two speeds… super slow and super fast. The payoff is often worth the frustration but better balance is needed. It looks like they are not focused on two tighter cycles as I had hoped… one pre- and one post- Crisis. I fear Crisis may bring Earth 1 and Earth 38 together but Supergirl will carry on with it’s current storytelling as its unfolding quite slowly. I hope for good payoffs again this year. But other than that glimpse of Monitor in the premiere, Supergirl seems oblivious to the Crisis where it is front and center on Arrow and Flash.
S5 likes… the new suit, although I’d like a better understanding of it. The first appearance of her suit was super fan. Also there were a couple of good action scenes like the black hole and dinosaur in the premiere, Supergirl fighting faux Alex, and last week’s aerial maneuvering with Supergirl catching a bullet in mid flight and then using her heat vision to disarm an ahemr under Ma’alef’ak’s control. Also when last week’s baddie took away Supergirl’s breath, it was a nice touch seeing the girl of steel turn blue and back again when she got the upper hand.
Sorry for the 2nd year now, this is turning into a slow plodding preachy boring show. Almost as full as Batwoman.
At least Batwoman always let the audience know what it was going to be unlike Supergirl.
The cast begins to be over crowded now but well, if it can bring something interesting, why not?!
A question: I learned that Katie McGrath’s contract (signed for 3 years) should expire this year. Do you know if CW intents to renew it? I hope because she can act and her character, Lena Luthor, is very interesting.
