ABC is the latest network to jump on the back-nine bandwagon, issuing full-season orders to freshman series Stumptown and mixed-ish as well as sophomore drama The Rookie. Although the network did not reveal the exact number of addition episodes it has commissioned for the trio, an ABC insider confirms that mixed-ish has indeed secured a traditional nine-episode pickup for a total of 22), while The Rookie has snagged seven additional episodes (for a total of 20). A precise episode count for Stumptdown is still being finalized.
Regarding the fate of fellow freshman entry Emergence, a source confirms that Season 1 was always intended to conclude following the serialized drama’s initial 13-episode order; a decision on a possible second season will be made this spring.
Ever-so-slightly outperforming its sire and lead-out, mixed-ish thus far is averaging a 0.74 demo rating — the network’s highest rated fall launch — and 3.3 million total viewers. With Live+7 DVR playback factored in, those tallies rise to 5.1 mil and a 1.2.
Stumptown, meanwhile, is averaging 3.7 million total viewers and higher than a 0.6 demo rating; with DVR playback, those tallies more than double to almost 8 million and a 1.5.
In its new Sunday home, The Rookie is averaging a very steady 3.7 mil/0.6, down just a tick from its freshman run (which aired in Tuesday’s Death Slot) and more than doubling to 7.8 mil and a 1.3 with DVR playback.
In a statement, ABC’s entertainment president, Karey Burke, said, “This fall, Stumptown has delivered a rich, inventive and fun thrill ride each week with a stellar cast that features one of the most fearless female characters at the center; mixed-ish has established itself as one of the sharpest, funniest and most original new comedies of the season; and The Rookie has continued to bring compelling storytelling and powerful performances to its passionate and loyal fan base. Thanks to the brilliant creative teams behind these series, along with the phenomenal casts and crews, for delivering three incredibly entertaining and distinctive shows. We’re so proud of this great crop of shows that are all off to strong starts this fall, and we can’t wait to bring more fantastic episodes to our schedule this season.”
TVLine’s 2020 Renewal Scorecard has been updated to reflect Stumptown, mixed-ish and The Rookie‘s evolving renewal odds.
IMO, Mixedish is better than Blackish this season, and not bearly as preachy as Grownish. IOW, it is the strongest show in the ish world right now.

And thanks for the update on Emergence. I like it so far, but I hope we get some sort of closure in S1, as ABC has a HORRIBLE track record when it comes to renewing genre shows. Of course, we’ll need to see what comes next, now that we know what Piper is.
*nearly as preachy. I swear, I DID proofread, but still missed that typo. :)
Mixed-ish is a far superior show to Grown-ish but Black-ish is still my favorite.
I’m now worried about the renewal prospects of emergence.
I wouldn’t be. If anything, keeping seasons to around 13 episodes seems to actually help renewal prospects for highly serialized shows. Not saying that the numbers are actually good enough for renewal, but shorter seasons help low-rated shows survive.
In the streaming world many shows get only a 10 episode cycle or season at a time. I hope it gets renewed and I think shorter seasons could help keep its quality up.
Happy for Mixed-ish. Good show.
glad to hear this, but i thought the rookie already had a full-season order? or did getting a season 2 renewal not automatically mean 18-22 episodes?
Yeah, I was surprised by that. Maybe they were waiting to see if the controversy affected the ratings?
It is not unusual for Season 2 shows to start with 13-episode orders.
You learn something new every day!
That feels like a recent change in network ordering?
Happy for Stumptown, love that show!!
Yay Stumptown!
I hope Emergence gets renewed. It’s my favorite new ABC show but I do watch Mixed ish and Stumptown and glad they got full seasons.
Emergence is the only show I watch on ABC. So far, I’m liking the show, which is saying something because I often don’t watch shows until they are already guaranteed a second season. Too many shows I’ve watched over the years get suddenly cancelled and I really get bummed and so for the past few years I don’t watch new series. This show, however, intrigued me, and I wanted to see what it was about, and I’m actually glad to learn that it at least was designed for only 13 episodes, so hoping that with that in mind, it will have some kind of closure for viewers in case it isn’t renewed.
Can I just say Yea for The Rookie additional episodes? Great show and really like starting my week off with it on Sundays.
I love Stumptown and am glad to see it got a full season order. My track record with new ABC shows is awful. I usually invest a lot of time in them, just to have them canceled after the first set of episodes!!
I love the rookie! And I also really like Emergence. Would like to see more stories of that
Glad for Stumptown & Mixed-ish
Thanks for the update on stumptown and rookie love them both but watch them on DVR specifically the rookie being that it’s on the same time as Sunday night football!

I’m really enjoying Mixed-ish so I’m glad for the renewal. I’m not that into Stumptown but I do watch it and think it would probably benefit from having less than 22.
Are Hulu or ABC.com viewing numbers of recent episodes included in the DVR playback numbers? This is how we watch almost everything and seems to me to be the easiest to count.
Stumptown and The Rookie are two of my favorite shows. Glad to see they received more episodes.
Wow ABC! Stumptown, The Rookie, All Rise. Great casts and writers. I must check out Emergence. I am really loving Stumptown. Excellent cast & characters. Fingers crossed for growing Sue Lynn/Dex mutual respect. With all her wounds and struggles I look forward to the growth of Dex into someone who can find a bit of peace in her life because of that growth and drive to overcome her obstacles. Love that Ali Larter joined the Rookie. Love that show too. I am liking All Rise too. There are some far fetched bits, but I find much of that on TV. So did ABC get some new folks in programming? New folks taking chances on an eclectic bunch of shows that has me looking forward to seeing the next episode of each. I remember watching TV before cable. A few networks broadcast and picked up by an antenna on my roof. I remember the excitement of new seasons and waiting to see which of the “big 3” would air shows I wanted to watch. Great job ABC. With this programming I don’t have to search a hundred channels for something good to watch.
Stumptown is one of the best shows to keep you on the edge of your seat all of the time there is death to all of the characters keep it on your schedule
Stumptown and The Rookie are the best new tv we have had in a long time. It would be a mistake not to renew them both. Not everyone wants to watch trash reality shows. We are tired of shows that read like a soap opera
Why can we not have a show that teaches good feelings instead of cheating, bad language and sex
I’ve really enjoyed Stumptown because it is not just straight forward. The characters are developing nicely and we are learning more about them. This is not a formula story each week and that is refreshing. It’s also great to see this showcasing Portland! I’m very much looking forward to seeing more episodes and a season 2 – although I respect the difficulty in making a show during times of physical distancing.
