The Wellington-class was a Federation class XI light cruiser starship in Starfleet service in the 24th century, becoming active on reference stardate 2/8802.
History and specifications[]
These vessels were produced, about three per year, at Vannis, Troyius and Argelius Shipyards.
The Wellington vessels crewed 175, with space to carry 50 Starfleet Marines troops for deployment. Additionally, the Wellington could carry 5,000 metric tons of cargo, rated at 100 SCU (standard cargo units). Unloaded, the Wellington vessels weighed 165,475 metric tons and measured 175 meters in length, 62 meters in width and 37 meters in height.
The Wellington computers were of the M-7A type, and the vessels were loaded with three standard (6 person) personnel transporters, two 12 person combat deployment transporters and four cargo transporter stages (2 of them small scale, 2 of them large scale). There were also 4 Federation shuttlecraft standard to these vessel shuttlebays. These vessels were designed for frontier defense, used as a "trip-wire" to intercept enemy incursion forces, usually deployed in squadrons of three Wellington vessels.
The Wellington warp engines were FTWC-1 type, rated to cruise at warp factor 12 and max out at warp factor 14 (original warp scale measurement). The impulse engines were of the FIG-1 type, and Wellington had 6 FH-9 phaser emitters, in three dual phaser banks, with arcs of fire to fore as well as port and starboard. The vessels had FP-4 photon torpedo/plasma torpedo launcher weapons and were defended by FSO model deflector shields. These vessels equipped the Long Lance, a specialized plasma weapon designed to disrupt enemy sensors, computers and and communications.
In the latter half of the 24th century, the Wellington was still in production, with over 33 vessels having been built between stardates 2/8802 and 2/9912. Before The Star Trek Encyclopedia clarified the class of the Niagara-class USS Wellington referred to in TNG episode: "11001001" and the Wambundu-class USS Drake referred to in TNG episode: "The Arsenal of Freedom", FASA authors had apparently intended to assign this class's prototype ship and USS Drake as the ships mentioned. This contradiction can be reconciled by presuming the newer ships had succeeded these vessels and assumed their names, although there's no specific reference in the FASA material that supports the vessels were no longer in service.
Although canon Star Trek never described the "transwarp drive" experiments of the late 23rd century as being successful upgrades, many ships in FASA RPG sources, including this one, were described as transwarp vessels. This can be reconciled by assuming whatever upgrades took place became integrated in the warp drive capabilities seen in canon and as such, were not commonly mentioned, and perhaps were only marginally effective to the point they didn't bear mentioning. It is also possible that the advent of the transwarp fleet could be interpreted to represent a different continuity.
