Specifically, this context refers to the type-1 phaser used by the Federation Starfleet from the 23rd century, circa the 2260s decade and certain type-2 phasers used from the 24th century onward that were manufactured without a pistol grip. The more specific designation phaser pistol was sometimes used to refer to hand phaser weapons with a pistol grip, and two-handed variations of such weapons were usually referred to as phaser rifles and not considered hand phasers.
