Alaska from space

Alaska 24th century, remastered

A 24th century city in Alaska

Alaska was a region of the North American continent of Earth. A state within the United States of America, it bordered the country of Canada.

History[]

In 1893, a young Jack London told Samuel Clemens of his dream to go to Alaska and was encouraged by Clemens, who mentioned the Klondike and aurora borealis as some of Alaska's features. (TNG: "Time's Arrow, Part II")

In 1986, George and Gracie were flown to Alaska in a special 747 and released into the Bering Sea. (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home)

Earth political map

21st century map showing Alaska's political border

A 21st century-era political map of Earth, including detailed political boundaries, was stored in the USS Enterprise's library computer in 2254. This map was among the materials viewed by the Talosians when they scanned the Enterprise computer. (TOS-R: "The Cage")

In the alternate reality of 2258, as the Narada approached Earth, Alaska could be seen on the ship's viewscreen. (Star Trek)

In 2286, during the Whale Probe crisis, Juneau reported that cloud cover had increase to ninety-five percent. (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home)

Starfleet officer William T. Riker was born in Alaska on August 19, 2335, to Kyle and Betty Riker, and would go on to spend his childhood there. (TNG: "Unnatural Selection", "The Icarus Factor", "Conundrum", "Lower Decks", PIC: "The Bounty")

Will Riker later recalled his father would cook him split pea soup to keep him warm "on cold Alaskan nights." (TNG: "The Outcast")

In 2344, while a 9-year-old Will Riker had hooked an Alaskan fish while fishing with his father, his father took the fishing rod and reeled the fish in for him. Though Will was photographed holding the fish as if he'd caught it, he held animosity as his father for the incident. (TNG: "The Icarus Factor")

Earth map, 20th century, North Pacific

Retroactive continuity: A 20th century-era political map of Earth was stored in the USS Enterprise library computer in 2254. According to this map, the International Date Line was between the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (later Russia) and the United States of America. The line went through the North Pacific Ocean and the Bering Sea. This map was among the materials viewed by the Talosians when they scanned the Enterprise computer. (TOS: "The Cage")

The script of DS9: "One Little Ship" mentioned another Alaskan location, Point Barrow.

Both the Star Trek Encyclopedia, 4th ed., vol. 1, p. 223, and StarTrek.com identified Valdez, Alaska as Riker's place of birth. [1](X)

The Alaska pavilion in Star Trek Nemesis was built as a set on Paramount Stage 32.

Alaska was used as a filming location twice. It was the first filming location ever outside of California when Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country filmed some Rura Penthe scenes there (more information here). Aerial shots of Alaska were also used to establish Delta Vega in Star Trek.
