The Scottish Junior Football Association (SJFA) is split into three regions which organise their own distinct league and cup competitions. The SJFA used to be split into six regions, but in 2002 they took the decision to reform into three to try and ensure more games between the top clubs and hence increase their revenues.

The Western Region was formed by the amalgamation of the Central and Ayrshire regions. The league set-up in the region is a "Superleague" combining the best teams from these former regions, and two regionalised leagues beneath. There are two divisions to the Superleague, and the regional leagues are stylised "District Leagues". The district leagues below the Superleague correspond to the former two regions that combined to create the Western region. There is a Central District League (with two divisions) and a Ayrshire District League.

At the end of each season clubs are promoted and relegated beween the tow divisions of the Superleague and between the Superleague and the two district leagues below. Clubs are also promoted between the two divisions of the Central District League.

Pollok FC won the first Western Region Superleague title in season 2002-03.
