- For the purposes of this category, "Central America" is defined in accordance with the World Geographical Scheme for Recording Plant Distributions (WGSRPD) as a biogeographical region of Southern America, comprising:
- Belize
- Costa Rica
- El Salvador
- Guatemala
- Honduras
- Nicaragua
- Panama.
- The Central American Pacific Islands — Clipperton Island, Cocos Island, & Malpelo Island.
- Taxa of the lowest rank are always included. Higher taxa are included only if endemic.
- In other phytogeographic systems, Central America is a region of Northern America, with the bi-coastal Isthmus of Panama region a distribution ecotone of Northern and Southern America.
- Note that Mexico is not included in this region, but within Northern America under Lichens of North America.
