Kanako Momota (百田 夏菜子, Momota Kanako, born July 12, 1994) is a Japanese idol singer. She is best known as the leader of the female idol group Momoiro Clover Z.[2]

Biography

Kanako Momota was born on July 12, 1994, in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan.[3][4]

As a young girl Momota did rhythmic gymnastics. Wanting to improve her dance skills (because she was told she didn't have a strong enough dance base), she started going to a dance school. The children there often participated in all sorts of auditions for entertainment projects and the parents constantly talked about it to each other. So once, when Kanako went to a bookstore to buy a fashion magazine, her mother bought a magazine specializing in auditions. By chance, there was an advertisement for an audition held by the talent agency Stardust Promotion. They decided to apply and send a photo.[5] She won the audition and was subsequently signed to the agency, when in 5th grade of elementary school (aged 10 or 11).[4] In the spring of 2008, Momota was added to a girl group, Momoiro Clover, which Stardust Promotion had recently founded. A few months later, she replaced Reni Takagi as its leader.[6]

In March 2011, it was announced that Kanako would appear in Mika Ninagawa's cosplay photoshoot series in the fashion magazine Zipper. In Ninagawa's photos Kanako dressed as a bee and a ladybug.[7]

Starting on April 14, 2012, Kanako succeeded famous 7-year-old child actress Mana Ashida[8] as subhost of the TV show Meringue no Kimochi, broadcast on Nippon Television.[9][10] At that time, neither she nor Momoiro Clover Z were widely known. But when in 2013 it was announced that she would leave the program after almost a year and a half, television ratings were expected to drop because of her popularity.[11] On August 12, 2013, Momota became the first person to appear on both the front and back covers of an issue of QuickJapan magazine. The issue had a long (20,000-character) interview with her.[12]

On December 20, 2013, Kanako appeared on the late night TV show Tamori Club. The episode was called Weed Encyclopedia and dedicated to wild weeds.[13]

Momoiro Clover Z

Kanako Momota's signature color in the group is red.[14][15][16] So she almost always wears red costumes. She introduces herself as "Cinderella of tea plantations" (because her hometown is famous for tea).[17]

Her trade mark stunt is a so-called "shrimp jump" (エビぞりジャンプ).

She is the leader of Momoiro Clover Z and performs acrobatics.[18] (The group's concerts are known for the energetic performances, which incorporate elements of ballet, gymnastics, and action movies.[19]) Momota's trademark stunt is a so-called "shrimp jump" (エビぞりジャンプ), which is an upward jump with an arched back and both legs bent backwards, called a sheep jump in gymnastics, which she performs during the song "Ikuze! Kaitō Shōjo". (Also, in the same song, other members do cartwheels and Momota performs a handspring.) Kanako's "shrimp jump" is the highlight of the group's live concerts.[20][21]

On October 4, 2013, she failed to land the jump and fell on her rear end. The accident caused a stir among fans and was widely reported by the Japanese media.[22][23] The news was posted to the top of Yahoo Japan website. Momota was not injured.[24]

Personal

Momota is left-handed, but uses the right hand in sports.[25] She says she is cheerful, competitive in everything but sometimes a slow starter. Her hobby is relaxing while watching DVDs at home. Her favorite sports are rhythmic gymnastics and basketball.[26][27] She dreams to co-act in a film with Atsuko Maeda, a former member of AKB48.[28] At school, she enjoyed PE, but disliked English.[27]
