Jonah Hex is an upcoming American superhero Western film based on the DC Comics character of the same name.[2] Under Warner Bros., the film is directed by Jimmy Hayward and stars Josh Brolin as the title character, Jonah Hex, and also stars John Malkovich, Michael Fassbender and Megan Fox. The film is scheduled to be released on June 18, 2010.

Premise

Jonah Hex (Josh Brolin) is a scarred drifter and bounty hunter of last resort, a tough and stoic gunslinger who can track down anyone... and anything. Having survived death, Jonah's violent history is steeped in myth and legend, and has left him with one foot in the natural world and one on the "other side." His only human connection is with Leila (Megan Fox), whose life in a brothel has left her with scars of her own. But Jonah's past is about to catch up with him when the U.S. military makes him an offer he can't refuse: in exchange for his freedom from the warrants on his head, he must track down and stop the dangerous terrorist Quentin Turnbull (John Malkovich). But Turnbull, who is gathering an army and preparing to unleash Hell, is also Jonah's oldest enemy and will stop at nothing until Jonah is dead. Early rumors emerged about a zombie army or Quentin trying to rewin the war, but these were dismissed when producers said "Quentin is more of a terrorist upset about the outcome of the war not someone trying to fight and rewin it."

Cast

  • Josh Brolin as Jonah Hex: A disfigured bounty hunter.[3] Prior to Brolin's casting, actor Thomas Jane petitioned the studio for the role, hiring a makeup artist to give him the appearance of Jonah Hex.[4] Brolin initially hated the script, but changed his mind, growing to like its tongue-in-cheek tone.[5]
  • Michael Shannon as Doctor Cross Williams: The ringleader of a gladiator circus. The studio plans to have Williams in a recurring character in sequels to the film.[8]

Lance Reddick was seen in the trailer as an armourer of sorts who supplies Hex with his new weapons.

Production

Brolin, Fox, and Fassbender promoting the film at the 2009 San Diego Comic-Con International

In 2000, 20th Century Fox developed a one-hour adaptation based on the character to television with producers Akiva Goldsman and Robert Zappia involved, but the project did not make it to production.[10] By July 2007, Warner Bros. Pictures held feature film rights to the character and sought to produce a film. Goldsman paired with Andrew Lazar as producers, and Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor adapted the screenplay,[11] which adopted an incarnation of the comic books that combined the Western genre with supernatural elements.[12] In October 2008, Josh Brolin entered talks to be cast as Jonah Hex under the direction of Neveldine and Taylor.[13] In November 2008, Neveldine and Taylors stepped down from being directors due to creative differences with the studio.[14] The studio explored the possibility of hiring Andy Fickman or McG and by January 2009, it chose Jimmy Hayward to direct Jonah Hex.[12] By the following February, Brolin was set to star alongside John Malkovich, who was cast as the antagonist Quentin Turnbull. Legendary Pictures paired with Warner Bros. Pictures to co-finance the film.[3] Filming began in Louisiana in April 2009.[8]

On September 2, 2009, Ain't it Cool News reported that heavy metal band Mastodon are scoring the film and have been working on it for some time.[15]

Music

The music score is composed by Marco Beltrami and the heavy metal band Mastodon.

Merchandise

Tonner Doll Company released in May 2010 Saloon Leila as puppet.[16]

NECA is also producing action figures based on the film.

Release

The film is scheduled to be released on June 18, 2010. The film's first trailer debuted online on April 29, 2010 then attached to A Nightmare on Elm Street.
