Greenberg attended Rutgers University from 1989 to 1993. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a B.A. in English and a minor in Art History. In December of 1989, Greenberg met poet Allen Ginsberg in New York City. Within two years, at the PEN America New Writers series #21, Ginsberg would introduce the then 20 year old poet as his lateset "great discovery". Greenberg published two chap book collections of verse in 1991: ''Flesh'' and ''Astronomy''.
