While completing filming on Grant Morrison: Talking With Gods, Meaney began work on his next project, a documentary profile of Warren Ellis. The film was shot between 2010 and 2011, shooting with Ellis in London and picking up interviews in New York, Los Angeles and San Diego. The film featured numerous experimental interludes, including a muppet version of Ellis. Respect Films again partnered with Halo 8 to distribute and the film premiered at the Napa Valley Film Festival.
Pizzolo was invited to give a lecture on DiY media at 2600 Magazine's H.O.P.E.: Hackers On Planet Earth conference. He titled the lecture "Open Source Mediamaking" and articulated the need for independent media by contrasting the relatively tepid news coverage of the 1999 WTO protests in Seattle against the provocative and incendiary documentary footage shot independently by activists on the ground inside the protests. The radical band Atari Teenage Riot invited Pizzolo to create a video for their song "Rage" and utilize the documentary footage in the hopes of spreading it to a wider audience. Pizzolo incorporated footage from the WTO protests in Seattle, the World Bank protests in Washington DC, and the May Day protests in Berlin where members of Atari Teenage Riot were arrested (footage was provided by pickAxe Productions, Big Noise Films, Re:Generation TV, and Philipp Virus). The video played numerous festivals including the Chicago Underground Film Festival and was later included in Buddyhead's Punk Is Dead music video compilation DVD.

HALO 8 Entertainment
In 2005, Pizzolo formed HALO 8 Entertainment, a production, distribution, and marketing company devoted to counterculture films, punk rock cinema, and alt-lifestyle videos. Although the company was partly devised as a distribution infrastructure for Kings Mob's productions, HALO-8 quickly grew into a thriving indie studio with various shingles including horror movie/cult film sub-label Films and alt-lifestyle sub-label DiY-Fest Video. Pizzolo also created a best-selling franchise for each sub-label: Slumber Party Slaughterhouse: The DVD Game for UnitShifter and Fitness for Indie Rockers for DiY-Fest. The film was acquired for distribution by XLRator Media and was released in summer 2016.
One of the first films Pizzolo championed at HALO-8 was the controversial and embattled Your Mommy Kills Animals, a critically acclaimed documentary about the animal rights movement. Although widely praised for its unbiased approach, the film drew the ire of Washington lobbying firm Center for Consumer Freedom, who waged a costly legal campaign to block release of the film. Despite Amazon.com, Netflix, and numerous other retailers, film festivals, and movie theaters' decision to drop the film when faced with legal threats and intimidation, Pizzolo stood by the film and continued its distribution despite fierce, ongoing opposition.

Meaney also contributed a short story, "The Green" to the Occupy Comics anthology, and reunited with editor Matt Pizzolo and Black Mask Studios for the four issue comic book miniseries Last Born, with artist Eric Zawadzki.

Patrick Meaney is a film director, screenwriter, producer, comic book writer, and editor, best known for his work as a director of documentaries about the world of comics books, including Grant Morrison: Talking With Gods, Warren Ellis: Captured Ghosts, She Makes Comics and Neil Gaiman: Dream Dangerously. He also directed the horror film House of Demons, and his most recent film is the musical romance The Brink Of.

Career

[edit]

Grant Morrison: Talking With Gods

[edit]

In 2008, Meaney was approached by Sequart to turn a series of blog posts about Grant Morrison's comic book series The Invisibles into a book. In the process of working on the book, they decided to approach Morrison with the idea of creating a documentary about his life and work.[1] He agreed, and filming began in 2009.[2] In 2010, the film was completed and picked up for distribution by Halo-8 Entertainment. The film received critical acclaim from outlets like Variety,[3] Wired,[4] and Attack of the Show.[5]

Warren Ellis: Captured Ghosts

[edit]

While completing filming on Grant Morrison: Talking With Gods, Meaney began work on his next project, a documentary profile of Warren Ellis. The film was shot between 2010 and 2011, shooting with Ellis in London and picking up interviews in New York, Los Angeles and San Diego.[6] The film featured numerous experimental interludes, including a muppet version of Ellis.[7] Respect Films again partnered with Halo 8 to distribute and the film premiered at the Napa Valley Film Festival.[8]

The Image Revolution, She Makes Comics and more

[edit]

From 2012 to 2015, Meaney worked on several additional documentary projects. The Image Revolution, which chronicles the tumultuous founding of iconic indie comics publisher Image Comics was acquired for distribution by Shout Factory in 2015, and released in January 2016.[9] The film was praised by outlets like Latino Review, who called it "one of the best documentaries of the year".[10] Concurrently, Meaney produced the documentary exploration of women in the comics industry, She Makes Comics, with director Marisa Stotter. The film was selected by the 2015 San Diego Comic-Con Film Festival, where it won the Best Documentary Award.[11] The film was acquired for distribution by XLRator Media and was released in summer 2016.[12]

As a director, he created the short form documentary, Comics in Focus: Chris Claremont's X-Men, which was expanded for feature release in 2018.[13]

Meaney also contributed a short story, "The Green" to the Occupy Comics anthology, and reunited with editor Matt Pizzolo and Black Mask Studios for the four issue comic book miniseries Last Born, with artist Eric Zawadzki.[14]

Neil Gaiman: Dream Dangerously

[edit]

In 2016, Meaney completed a long in the works documentary on iconic fantasy author Neil Gaiman. The film chronicles Neil on his final signing tour, and explores Gaiman's passion for writing, as well as the challenges of balancing embracing the opportunities available to him as a successful writer and creating the stories that fans love.[15] The film was released in July 2016 by Vimeo on Demand.[16]

House of Demons

[edit]

In 2018, Meaney released his first narrative film, House of Demons. The film follow fours estranged friends who spend a weekend in a remote cabin that used to be home to a Manson Family like cult. The film features numerous popular personalities from the geek world, and was acquired for distribution by Sony Home Entertainment/Smith Global Media.[17]

In 2021, Meaney released Syphon, a comic book mini-series for Image Comics, co-written with Mohsen Ashraf.[18] The series received positive reviews,[19] and won the Ringo Award for fan-favorite hero.[20]

In 2024, his film The Brink Of was released.[21] This music romance featured seven original songs,[22] and received a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.[23]
