The program is purported to be reality based, however, it has received wide-spread criticism from those who suggest that the content is staged for dramatic effect{{cn|date=October 2012}}. Adding to the claims that the show is staged is the fact that two of the characters introduced in the second season, Scott "Scott the Mover" Tassone and Chrissy Kachadorian-Tassone, were not known to act as storage hunters until their appearance on the series. There has been controversy surrounding the inclusion of the Scott Tassone character.
