History
In the 60’s, Tilak Nagar (Mumbai) situated between Chembur and Ghatkopar was a huge township colony specially constructed for industrial workers, working in and around Chembur. There were no schooling facilities for the workers and their children. The population mainly consisted of lower middle class Maharashtrian families
Shri Janardan Krishna Karmalkar, a teacher had an experience of founding schools like Chembur High School decided to shift his attention to this needy area. The Housing Board gave him part of building no 26 in Tilak Nagar to start his endeavor. He founded a trust “Gareeb Vidyarthi Sahayyak Mandal (GVS Mandal)” in 1958. The main aim of the trust is embedded in the name itself “A trust to help poor and needy class of society”. He started a school under the auspices of the trust on 19th June 1961, which was called as “Amchi Shala”.
All throughout the formation of the trust and the school he was ably supported by his wife Smt Indira Karmalkar, also a teacher and later became Principal of Amchi Shala. In the beginning there were 310 students with 7 divisions and 11 teaching staff.
School Philosophy
The school believes in the principle that education should not only be limited to what is taught in textbooks. For overall progress and mental growth of a student the school believes in extra and co-curricular activities in art, science, nature, environment, sports and culture.
The school now has its own 3 storied building which has around 24 classrooms. The school works in 2 shifts. Amchi Shala has the following facilities for all round development of students.
- ~ 10,000 sq ft playground
- ~ 3200 X 2 sq ft Fully air – conditioned assembly hall
- 2 Fully air – conditioned computer labs housing 40 computers provided by IBM through IBM Kidsmart program [1]
- Science Lab with projector facilities
- Library for students
- Medicinal plant garden maintained by students
