She was the daughter of Martin Bent Huestis and Victoire Ayrton Johnson, a sister of the [[Chief Statistician of Canada|Dominion Statistician]] [[George Johnson (statistician)|George Johnson]]. She was educated at the [[Sacred Heart School of Halifax|Sacred Heart Convent]] in Halifax.
