Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Stryd Tanyrhiw, Tregarth Much of Tregarth north of the disused railway line is of fairly recent origin. Stryd Tanyrhiw (=below the hill street) is the oldest nucleated settlement in this part of the village and dates from the early 20th century. The terraced houses on this street have their walls slate-clad. The street once had an unsavoury reputation. "Stryd y Cynffonwyr" (Yes-Men Street) and Rhes y Bradwyr (Traitors' Row) were the most polite names by which this street was known. The houses, particularly fine ones for the period, were constructed by the Penrhyn Estate to house strike breakers and their families (which the presence of Police and the British Army could not guarantee to keep safe) in nearby Bethesda during the bitter three-year-long Penrhyn Lockout of 1900-1903.
