Description 80-G-22126: Identification photograph taken for Naval Intelligence of members of German submarine crew taken to Naval Operating Base, Norfolk, Virginia, July 1942. Official U.S. Navy photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives. (2016/09/20). This is Horst Degen, commander of U-701 (see Rescue of U-701 Survivors July 9, 1942 at uboatarchive.net, photo #17), which was sunk off North Carolina, and was the first “kill” by a USAAF plane in WWII.
