As if the beauty pageant-style dating special Who Wants to Marry a Multi-Millionaire wasn’t controversial enough when it aired in 2000, Fox went even further with Joe Millionaire. The series followed in 2003 and compounded the hidden identity element of its spiritual predecessor with an outright lie. The women here would again compete with one another for the heart of a millionaire while living in a luxurious French chateau — only, the guy they were vying for wasn’t rich, even though he actively participated in that lie all season long. In Tuesday’s (September 24) latest episode of Dark Side of Reality TV, several former contestants — winner Zora Sabrina, along with Melissa Michael, Allison Ball, and Amanda Garcia — and casting producer Dawn George open up about how truly wild their experiences were and what audiences didn’t know about the show. Here are the most bizarre revelations in the special. 1. The contestants...

There’ve been a lot of edgy and even morally questionable reality shows to air throughout TV history, but perhaps the most obviously inadvisable was Kid Nation. The 2007 reality competition series brought 40 young children out to live together in a New Mexico ghost town, where they were expected to feed themselves for at least two meals a day, hold down jobs in socially striated positions, run a government, live in squalor and filth, and, well, entertain the masses all the while. And Tuesday’s (September 17) new edition of Dark Side of Reality TV brings back several of those contestants to break down some of the seedier behind-the-scenes details of this one-season blunder. Here are nine of the most shocking revelations about Kid Nation, according to this docuseries episode. 1. The kids were pushed to the brink right from the start. Almost as soon as they arrived at the Bonanza City location,...

It was a topic of controversy right from the very beginning of its run in 2007, and time has not made Kid Nation look any better in retrospect. Tuesday’s (September 17) new episode of Dark Side of Reality TV turns to this very short-lived CBS reality competition series, which brought together 40 children from the ages of 8 to 15 to a private ranch in Bonanza City, New Mexico, to create their own brand new society, fit with government and services, with as little adult interactions as possible. What resulted, perhaps not surprisingly, was a Lord of the Flies reality redux, fit with chores, survival skills development, and even town meetings. Appearing in Dark Side of Reality TV to talk about the show, which was met with negative reviews and low ratings, were participants Anjay Ajodha, Jimmy Flynn, Olivia Cloer and her father, and Daniel Kyri, along with producer Emily Sinclair and attorney Eric Johnson.
