Netflix’s latest addition to its Swedish drama roster, “A Part of You,” stars Felicia Truedsson and Edvin Ryding. Directed by Sigge Eklund and written by Michaela Hamilton, this film dives deep into the emotional turmoil of its characters while maintaining a stark sense of realism.
An Honest Look at Teen Drama
“A Part of You” presents itself as a straightforward drama without any pretensions. It adheres to the realistic aesthetic familiar to recent Swedish productions on Netflix, focusing on authentic character portrayals and dramatic themes. The film takes its characters’ struggles seriously, delivering a grounded and believable narrative.
However, this commitment to realism comes at a cost. Stylistically, the film resembles a made-for-television movie, and thematically, it leans towards moralistic storytelling. It suggests that straying from societal and parental expectations inevitably leads to trouble—a premise the film neither deeply examines nor robustly challenges. Despite this, Felicia Truedsson delivers a compelling performance,...

The thought of losing a sibling is unfathomable to those of us who are fortunate to have them. Perhaps it’s my closeness with my sister that lends to my appreciation of media that represent sibling bonds impeccably. They can be at each other’s throats all the time, or they can be as close as we are, or an awkward, long-lost bunch who have to find their way to loving each other again—it’s a bond that is somehow palpable through it all. The title A Part of You immediately piqued my interest as I learned that it was a story about sisters. I went into the film completely blind, and it definitely didn’t go as I expected. The film explores the life of 17-year-old Agnes after her sister unexpectedly dies, leaving her to navigate life after tragedy all by herself. Immediately, the idea of this film...

When you think of the greatest teen drama romances, it’s easy to automatically gravitate towards the classics: Pacey and Joey, Willow and Tara, Rory and Jess, and whichever side you were on with the love triangle between Brooke, Lucas, and Peyton. While the ’90s and ’00s were certainly full of great ships, there are also plenty of incredible couples from more recent teen shows worth talking about. Today’s streaming-dominated landscape may mean fewer slow burns, but there have also been positive developments: more characters of color at the center, increased LGBTQ+ representation, and less reliance on problematic tropes. It’s highly unlikely we would have gotten a YA show like Netflix’s Young Royals — which centers on a queer, interracial relationship — back in the early 2000s.

For most of its three-season run, Netflix’s Swedish queer romance Young Royals dealt out as much trauma as it did tenderness. The story of Prince Wilhelm (Edvin Ryding), the spare heir to the Swedish throne and Simon (Omar Rudberg), the scholarship student that steals his heart at a prestigious boarding school, never minced words about the struggle of class disparity, the tragedy of familial loss, the perils of social media (and sex tapes), the wounds of hazing, the sting of betrayal between friends and the political implications of being the next king after your brother dies.

Streaming television and an increased acceptance of LGBTQ+ culture has allowed queer programming to flourish in ways nobody would have expected even a decade ago. Token gay characters and very special episodes of sitcoms have been replaced with profound thematic experiences in which same-sex relationships are explored in the same ways their heterosexual counterparts are. In a sea of options to choose from, Netflix’s small Swedish series Young Royals checks more boxes than almost any other romance show these days.
The first two seasons feature the rocky relationship between the crown prince of Sweden, Wilhelm (Edvin Ryding), and a lower middle-class immigrant, Simon (Omar Rudberg), who fall in love and overcome social and political obstacles placed in their paths. The two big original releases on Netflix this month are Spaceman and 3 Body Problem. In Spaceman, Adam Sandler plays an astronaut alone and far from home who desperately wants to fix things with his wife. When he discovers an enormous alien spider in the bowels of his ship, a conversation between the two gets underway, and Sandler has a chance to make some big changes. To be clear: this is not a comedy!
Meanwhile, new sci-fi series 3 Body Problem hails from Game of Thrones co-creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss. Along with True Blood writer Alexander Woo, they’ve spun a tale that is set to blow your mind this March. Your mileage may vary, but it certainly looks interesting! And hey, we all love the show’s star, Benedict Wong.

As the final work in progress wrapped on Friday, Göteborg ‘s head of TV Drama Vision Cia Edström and head of industry and Nordic Film Market Josef Kullengård could finally relax after a mission well accomplished.
Two of their biggest challenges this year – hosting an industry showcase for 700-plus international delegates in a brand-new venue, the Clarion Hotel Draken, and lifting the Nordic industry’s moral by the crisis in the drama sector – had been successfully met. Variety drills down on how and why:

It’s already been a busy 2024 for Netflix. Out is long time film chief Scott Stuber; in are live sports (sort of), a huge Sundance splash, and 18 Oscar nominations, the most of any individual studio. What does the next 11 months have in store? Answer: a hell of a lot.
Netflix on February 1 released a teaser video for its biggest properties arriving in 2024, including more than 50 new movies and 90 new and returning series. The highlight is “Squid Game 2,” the follow-up season to the South Korean dystopian smash hit that became Netflix’s biggest show of all time.
At the end of Netflix’s mega-tease, we see Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) and his new bright-red hair walking through an airport when a mysterious voice on his phone tells him, “You’re going to regret the choice you made.”
“I’m going to find you, no matter what it takes,” he says in return.

Telling a story across two timelines can be a recipe for success or disaster, but Fellow Travelers Season 1 Episode 1 flawlessly immerses us in both timelines thanks to the enduring bond between Hawkins and Tim.
In the 1950s, we're seeing the origins of a love story, and in the 1980s, we're seeing just how wrong this relationship went as Tim is handed a likely death sentence in the form of an HIV diagnosis.
What led to their relationship being so fraught? I have some theories that don't reflect very well on Hawkins. We'll get to that in a little.
Fellow Travelers benefits off the bat from the chemistry of its leads, Jonathan Bailey and Matt Bomer.
Whoever thought of casting these two hotties as lovers deserves a promotion and a bonus.
I was sold on their bond from the get-go because the actors have chemistry for days.

He’s been around since the first season of Netflix’s Spanish hit, captivating viewers via his tender romance with heartthrob Ander, played by Arón Piper, and the jarring disapproval his character faces in his Muslim household.
Elite, created by Carlos Montero and Darío Madrona, premiered its seventh season Oct. 20, with Ayuso reprising his role. The series, which announced an eighth and final season over the summer, marks Netflix Spain’s longest-running fictional series.

Young Royals season two was full of some marvelous moments.
This season, we found our main characters in very dark places and others in utter confusion.
Some decisions that they made were truly insane.
Below, we have compiled some of those moments we considered the best.
From Sara's discovery about her body to Wilhelm going off script when giving That speech, we were not deprived of good stuff.
13. Wilhelm pulled a gun on August.
The hatred between Wilhelm and August is one of the biggest falling out between friends.
Wilhelm blames August for leaking that video and ensuring he found a way to evade justice while August wants Wilhelm's throne.
Wilhelm had been honing his gun handling skills, and we thought if there were someone who would be standing at the end of the barrel, it would be Marcus.
As Wilhelm had a gun to August's face, it looked like...

On September 8, 2022, Queen Elizabeth II of England passed away.
She had led an exemplary life of service to her country and her people.
With her passing came a renewed interest in the British monarchy and monarchies in general. The discourse surrounding them and their validity -- or even morality -- in the modern world became rejuvenated.
Viewers of Netflix's The Crown -- a dramatic take on the British monarchy -- are well aware of her struggle to rise to the throne at such a young age.
When this conversation is had, it mainly focuses on the effect monarchies have on their subjects. In a majorly democratic world, they are seen as an outdated method of governance that empowers a few people with no business wielding that power.
It can be argued that it doesn't track to have someone be automatically considered your superior by the simple fact that they...

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers from Season 2 of “Young Royals,” now streaming on Netflix.
Well, that is certainly one way to get the attention of the entire country of Sweden.
In the Season 2 finale of Netflix’s global sensation “Young Royals,” Sweden’s teenaged Crown Prince Wilhelm (Edvin Ryding) used a nationally broadcasted speech at his school Hillerska’s 120th anniversary jubilee to confess to his classmates, his family and his country that he’d lied about not being in the illegally distributed sex tape with Simon (Omar Rudberg). The very public moment of candor and bravery came after a season of regret over being forced to deny being in the video by his mother, the Queen Kristina of Sweden (Pernilla August) — a decision that drove a wedge between Wilhelm and Simon.
For this series-defining moment, “Young Royals” co-creator and head writer Lisa Ambjörn told Variety it was important...
