Iconic and one of the best actresses in Hindi films, Shabana Azmi, is celebrating 50 years of incredible, outstanding, brilliant and many more adjectives performances.
Shabana Azmi’s unparalleled triumphs do not impress her. “I don’t feel like The Shabana Azmi at all. It is very important to preserve a sense of normalcy, not to let all the recognition awards and milestones go to your ahead, which I’ve tried to throughout my life. I would kill myself if I behaved like The Shabana Azmi. Tell me, Subhash, did your most favourite Lataji ever behave like The Lata Mangeshkar?I am shocked at how quickly these fifty years have gone by. Mujhe toh pataa hi nahin chala waqt kab nikal gaya,” says the great Shabana Azmi about fifty years acting on stage and on screen.
“It is very therapeutic for me even now, after so many years to perform on stage and on screen.

The U.K. has selected Santosh, an Indian police procedural from director Sandhya Suri, to represent the country in the 2025 Oscars in the best international feature category.
Shahana Goswami stars as the titular Santosh, a driven young Hindu widow who inherits her husband’s job as a police constable thanks to a government scheme. She finds herself caught up in institutional corruption even as she warms to working with rough-edged veteran detective Inspector Sharma (Sunita Rajwar) on a brutal murder case involving a teenage girl from the lower caste Dalit community.
Santosh premiered in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard section this year, where it was quickly snatched up for North America by Metrograph Pictures. The Hollywood Reporter‘s review called the feature “gripping and engrossing” singling out Suri’s screenplay for praise. “Instead of unwieldy expository dialogue, Suri relies on conversations between Santosh and Sharma to shed light on the forces — a discriminatory society,...

Gender inequality, caste and police ethics make a compelling combination in this Indian crime drama. Santosh Saini (Shahana Goswami) is the focus from the start. A 28-year-old, her policeman husband has just been killed in riots and her in-laws view her “a cursed witch”, still smarting it seems from the fact that the union between her and their son Raman was a “love marriage”.
A lifeline presents itself in the form of a “compassionate appointment” government scheme, which means she can take on the job of her husband, but what on the surface appears to be a moment of empowerment, turns out to be much more compromised morally than she first imagines. Like recent Nepali film Pooja, Sir this is a crime drama that is less about the acts committed by offenders, or indeed who the perpetrators are, than by the institutional corruption that means justice is hard to come.

He multiplies the winks to his work of fifteen films, time markers flowing inexorably.

Halfway through Sandhya Suri’s engrossing police procedural Santosh, an older police officer (Sunita Rajwar) reminds a younger constable (Shahana Goswami) that when it comes to criminal cases, everyone — from the victim’s family to the detectives — is playing a role. One party lodges an accusation and the other delivers justice. Whether things are based in truth or reality counts less than one might think. The sentiment, hardly comforting to begin with, adopts a more sinister dimension later in the film, when the two women race against time to find the person who murdered a teenage girl in the Dalit community of a small town in northern India.
A few days after her parents reported her missing, Devika’s body was found in the well. The discovery of the girl (Nandani Tharu), whose swollen body contaminates the community water supply, sets off a storm of bad press for the local authorities.

While often more intellectually stimulating than emotionally engaging, “Santosh” lays bare the dark heart of communal divisions in modern India. Sandhya Suri’s narrative debut follows a driven young Hindu widow who inherits her husband’s job as police constable thanks to a government scheme. While the movie speaks the language of a fiercely feminist empowerment saga, it also zeroes in on what power actually means in a highly stratified society when a murky crime leads to the incendiary unfurling of dimensions of religion and caste.
“Santosh” is tethered to the perspective of its titular character. Actor Shahana Goswami embodies Santosh’s grief with striking resilience as she navigates a labyrinth of institutionalized misogyny and post-mortem red tape, but the movie is quick to put her in the khaki uniform of the Indian police. She’s rarely seen without it, and becomes a cinematic symbol in the process. “Santosh” may...

The first iteration of the Cannes Film Festival, planned for 1939, was scuppered when Germany invaded Poland to trigger the start of World War II. But when the festival finally got off the ground in 1946, Indian cinema came out swinging. Mounted shortly after the conclusion of the war, the first “real” Cannes Film Festival featured competition entries from Billy Wilder (The Lost Weekend), Roberto Rossellini (Open City), and David Lean (Brief Encounter). In the spirit of post-war peace and reconciliation, the competition jury, headed by French historian Georges Huisman, handed the top prize — then the Grand Prix — to films from 11 of the 18 countries represented that year.
This included India, with Chetan Anand’s social-realist drama Neecha Nagar, and, for a decade at least, the country was a regular fixture in Competition. After Anand came V. Shantaram with Amar Bhoopali (1952), then Raj Kapoor with Awaara (1953), and Bimal Roy with Do Bigha Zamin...

She said: “I have actively chosen roles that challenge conventional narratives, opting for characters that break away from cliches. I want to represent real women who one can relate to.”

The actress has not cared much for the traditional concept of networking, instead preferring to rely more on her acting prowess, emphasising that craft trumps everything else in the artistic industry.
Elaborating on the topic, Goswami said: “The measure of success lies in the quality of one’s work rather than the number of connections they have. Throughout my career, I have...

Zwigato
Directed by Nandita Das
How does one deal with life when it serves you juiceless lemons? You won’t find Nandita Das and her co-writer Samir Patil juicing the tragic circumstances of her delivery-boy Manas (Kapil Sharma) for tears in this gently effective drama of fringe employment, produced by Applause Entertainment..
This well-cut nugget has no room for tears. Kapil’s Zwigato delivery-boy delivers a performance that is keenly observant of reality: the languorous paunchy body language , the endless rounds on two-wheelers, handling difficult insulting customers at work , an invalid mother and two children at home… Kapil brings the entire force of destiny down on his character’s shoulder without making him a cry baby.
There is a beautiful moment where Manas put his head on his ailing mother’s lap. His wife Pratima walks in, sees the mother and son together, a walks out quietly.

New India is multi-faceted, multi-optional with many of the well-heeled being spoilt for choices while choosing a vocation. But despite all the so-called growth, several other categories of middle-class young men and women reel under pressure to find themselves age- and skill-appropriate employment.
For the Alpha generation, the e-commerce food delivery companies are a blessing, for they cater to the needs and orders of the customers who are more demanding and have more convenience and control over how and when they order their food. But that’s for the customers; the employees of such businesses face the brunt of it.
A double-edged sword for the unemployed in India, the sudden thriving numbers of delivery services have led to a Catch-22 situation. They have, in some ways, generated some income for those out of jobs,...

Comedian and actor Kapil Sharma spoke about his upcoming film ‘Zwigato’ and the challenges of playing the role of a delivery boy. He also shared that the character had him realised how tough life is for delivery boys, and that he has become more empathetic towards them.
He shared: “I understood how difficult the struggles of delivery boys can be, especially after doing this film. I remember once when my wife Ginni had ordered a cake, it got spoiled during the delivery process. The delivery boy assured her that he would bring a new cake to replace it in 15 minutes. Ginni came to me and told me about this and after finding out about the same, I became hesitant and stopped the delivery boy from going back to get a new cake.”
He added that sending the delivery boy back to bring a new cake may result in a deduction from his salary.

After its world premiere in Toronto, Nandita Das’ “Zwigato” has its Asian premiere in Busan’s A Window on Asian Cinema strand.
An acclaimed actor with credits including “Fire,” “Kannathil Muthamittal” and “Kamli,” Das made her directorial debut with “Firaaq” (2008), which debuted at Toronto. Her next film as director, “Manto” (2018), bowed at Cannes.
“Zwigato,” her third outing in the director’s seat, also bowed at Toronto. It began life as a short film that was to be part of an anthology produced by India’s Applause Entertainment. That project didn’t come to fruition, but Applause chief Sameer Nair convinced Das to expand the idea into a feature, which she did during the course of India’s first two Covid-19 lockdowns. This is a very good looking police procedural with some beautiful actresses getting together to play bestfriends for life, and in one case, in death.
What keeps one glued right till the end is the question: where is this going? More importantly, the principal actresses have the looks and sometimes the skills , though not always, to make us partially involved.
Spoiler Alert: Juhi Chawla, looking like an older version of Sanya Malhotra, in a classic case of a monstrous miscast plays Ishi Sangmitra , a high-flying wheelerdealer who gets savagely slayed in the first episode…or is it the second? It becomes a little tough to keep track when the narrative moves forward and back without warning.
