While it was originally touted as one of the big new series in development at Disney+, Nautilus hit choppy development waters and ended up in Davey Jones' turnaround locker. Fortunately for those of us in the UK and Ireland the show — inspired by Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea – has been picked up by Prime Video and is due to sail onto screens this October.
Nautilus has James Dormer at its creative helm and chronicles the origin story of Captain Nemo (Star Trek: Discovery and Toast Of London's Shazad Latif): an Indian Prince robbed of his birthright and family.
So he does what surely any of us would — he steals a formidable prototype submarine and escapes into the Indian Ocean with a ragtag crew, determined to enact revenge against the ruthless East India Mercantile Company.

Based on Jules Verne’s beloved Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, the series was initially in with Disney+ UK before it was culled as part of its notorious streaming content removal plan last year. It wound up with AMC in the States and is now with Amazon in the UK and Ireland.

Hollywood was conceived in the interim period between the silent era and the talkies, when a multiple studio system collectively decided to turn art into business. Star Trek and Star Wars were born a few years later when Jules Verne’s science-fiction popularity merged with the global Space Race frenzy.

Starting off as a wild idea, both IPs took off after the fantastical elements of the intergalactic adventures catered to the audience’s demands of the era. But little did one know how influential and phenomenal these franchises would grow to be, exceeding the limits of a studio-owned IP and becoming the franchise of the people.
Studio Politics Stands in the Way of Art & Expression
While numerous decisions factor into the making of a film or television project, one thing remains fairly constant: casting the perfect actor for the job.

Since the dawn of modern science and technology, authors have been embracing their inner futurist and writing about what they believed the future would bring us. Sometimes, that led to wacky and fantastical concepts like hoverboards, but other times, sci-fi predicting the future led to something that came remarkably close to what actually happened. Perhaps the most famous and most eerily correct comes from science fiction writer Jules Verne.
Jules Verne Predicted Nuclear Submarines
In Jules Verne’s critically acclaimed 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Verne envisioned a world in which submarines would be all-electric and capable of traveling great distances while underwater without the need to resurface. While he couldn’t have known that nuclear fission is how it would be done, he was remarkably close in his predictions as we now have fully electric submarines that can last months without needing to surface, fully fulfilling the central prediction in his novel.

A big question around science fiction has always been whether the genre is all about mindless escapism, a way of evading the dreary reality of everyday life, or a mindful way of looking at reality in order to change it. This is the question at the heart of “Future! Future!”, a sweet, endearing short film about everything scifi can bring us.
Future! Future! is screening at Short Shorts Film Festival and Asia
The story focuses on Makato, played by a delightful Ren Komai as a quirky high school girl and a huge fan of science and science fiction. We know that from the very start, when the camera introduces her by showing first all the posters and paraphernalia in her bedroom: a poster of “This Island Earth” (a memorable Hollywood film from the 1950s), a drawing of Marty McFly's DeLorean time machine in “Back to the Future”, an endearing doll of Einstein,...

So far, 2024 has been much better for television than expected, given the impact of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes in 2023. However, there was one genre that viewers were desperate to see more of, and that was period dramas. Aside from Bridgerton, there weren't too many premieres to be excited about in the first half of the year.
The second half, however, has some very interesting titles that you might want to check out. Here are 8 of the most promising period drama premieres to look forward to in the coming months of 2024.
Winter Palace
A co-production of Switzerland's RTS1, Play Suisse and Netflix, Winter Palace takes viewers to the snowy mountains and luxurious hotel of the early 1900s. The show lands in a sweet spot between a typical period drama and the modernity of The White Lotus, offering a different take on the aristocracy of the time.

Most any film school syllabus will likely cite Georges Méliès' 1902 film "A Trip to the Moon" (French title: "Le Voyage Dans la Lune") as the very first science fiction film ever made. Even the British Film Institute lists it as such, citing only a 1901 film called "Mister Moon" as the progenitor, and "Mister Moon" hardly counts as it is merely a musical short wherein actor Percy Honri dresses up as the moon and plays the ukulele. The film was meant to accompany a live performance. Not even the most hardcore sci-fi fans would classify that as "science fiction."
"A Trip to the Moon" is certainly one of the most recognizable silent sci-fi films, and many are likely familiar with the image of the Moon wincing in pain when a human rocket lands in its eye. "A Trip to the Moon" takes a lot of visual cues and ideas from the novels of Jules Verne,...

Hayao Miyazaki is considered one of the best animators of all time, and his work with Studio Ghibli includes some of the most beloved and acclaimed animated films in the history of the medium. The animator has helped change anime and animation so much that he refuses to permanently retire, choosing instead to deliver masterpiece after masterpiece and exploring different genres and tones, all while remaining true to his trademark themes and characters — determined heroines, magical realism, and anti-war messages. Miyazaki seems determined to continue working even if it means threatening the future of his studio after he's gone because he's yet to pick a successor.
While many people are familiar with Miyazaki's output with Studio Ghibli, not many know about his work prior to co-founding the studio with Isao Takahata and Toshio Suzuki. And yet, it is in that pre-Ghibli era that we find hints of the maestro that Miyazaki would become,...

Ahead of the release of The Strangers: Chapter 1, we chat to director Renny Harlin about reimagining one of the most beloved modern horror films.
When The Strangers, Bryan Bertino’s low-budget horror film, was released in 2008, it immediately burrowed itself under my skin. In the film, a couple, played by Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman, are stalked by masked assailants, who seemingly have no motive for tormenting the couple. The film was a massive hit and has earned itself a firm, deserved cult status.
16 years after the release of Bertino’s film, Finnish director Renny Harlin is attempting the impossible. He has taken the basic premise of The Strangers, kept the name and turned it into an ambitious trilogy of his own.
The film follows Maya (played by Madelaine Petsch) and Ryan (played by Froy Gutierrez) on a road trip across the country. They pull over to a remote town for some food,...

Kooky kid sister, romantic lead, comic turn, cantankerous old dame … we pick out her greatest roles
An early Shirley in this epic Technicolor comedy-adventure based on Jules Verne, overstuffed with superstar cameos and produced by the impresario Mike Todd. David Niven sauntered through the role of the globe-circling gent Phileas Fogg and 22-year-old MacLaine was cast in the way Hollywood sometimes saw her in those days … as someone whose feline, gamine looks had something exotic and Asiatic about them. She was the Indian Princess Aouda, widowed after a loveless arranged marriage but rescued from the funeral pyre by the bold Fogg, whom she then joins on his travels for a while. A sweet and likable comic turn.

One of the most popular and historic attractions at Disneyland is Space Mountain. The indoor roller coaster gives guests the feeling of being blasted off into outer space with projections of planets and stars while flying through the darkness. Over the years, multiple variants have been created, such as the popular From the Earth to the Moon, which was themed after French author Jules Verne and featured at Disneyland Paris from 1995 to 2005.
In recent years, another variant was developed called Hyperspace Mountain, which temporarily gives the attraction a Star Wars theme, having you pilot an X-Wing in the middle of a space battle. The variant’s first debut was in November of 2015 as a tie-in to the then-upcoming release of The Force Awakens. Since then, every year, the re-theme would appear at Disneyland for a limited time while the variant permanently took over the Disneyland Paris location in 2017.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe used to be at the apex of the world of Cinema at one time, especially thanks to the massive hit of the Avengers films. Interestingly enough, The Matrix was also inspired by a rare 1993 Marvel comic.

Adam Wingard's new film "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" has, tonally speaking, strayed far from Gareth Edwards' 2014 MonsterVerse kickoff film "Godzilla." Edwards' film was somber and sad, featuring very little "fun" monster destruction. As the MonserVerse series has progressed, however, it has crept inexorably toward a sillier tone before striking it rich with Wingard's 2021 entry "Godzilla vs. Kong." That film featured a battle between the titular titans, but also a cameo from Mechagodzilla, a monstrous robot extrapolated from the skull of the dead King Ghidorah. "GvK" also featured a fleet of human-built UFOs and a magical portal that led into the Hollow Earth, an unusual underground realm ruled by monsters.
The Hollow Earth idea is straight out of Jules Verne, but the mayhem-forward approach to a Godzilla movie comes from several of Toho's films released in the 1970s. Indeed, many critics and pundits have been comparing "GxK" to the series' Shōwa era,...

Before entering the DC franchise as Black Adam, Dwayne Johnson had many successful action films under his belt. The former WWE champion-turned-actor featured in films like San Andreas and Rampage apart from being a pivotal presence in The Fast and the Furious franchise. However, apart from this popular film series, The Rock’s other films have surprisingly not expanded into sequels.
Dwayne Johnson in Black Adam
Johnson’s producing partner Hiram Garcia attempted to explain the reasons behind this back in 2022. It appeared from Garcia’s revelations that The Scorpion King star’s commitment to DC and his character Black Adam could have been the deciding factor behind a film like Rampage not getting the greenlight for a sequel. As fate would have it, Johnson’s long-term desires for DC went up in smoke.

Before Godzilla vs. Kong finished its opening weekend, genre director and lifelong kaiju fan, Adam Wingard, knew he had to get these two crazy guys together again. “I remember there’s a moment at the end of the movie when Godzilla and Kong briefly team up to kill Mechagodzilla,” Wingard says while stifling a sheepish chuckle at the absurdity of it all. “And when that happened, the roof blew off the place. Jackie Chan has made a lot of successful movies both in his homeland and in the international arena. With the hundreds of projects under his belt, some were not well-received by the audience. One of the action star’s most popular Hollywood films is Disney’s Around the World in 80 Days.
Around the World in 80 Days (2004)
It was helmed as a reboot of the highly acclaimed 1956 version and an adaptation of Jules Verne’s 1873 novel. Apart from Chan, the film starred Steve Coogan and Cecile de France.

While the title sounds really exciting, Around the World in 80 Days was a critical and commercial flop. It only earned over $72 million worldwide against a production budget of $110 million, which means it lost a profit of at least $38 million. Those dismayed by the cancellation of the big-budget “Coyote vs. Acme” — a high-profile casualty of the recent Hollywood trend towards pulling the plug on near-completed projects — may find consolation and then some in “Hundreds of Beavers.” That is, if they become aware of it, of course. Chances are good that they will, eventually, as this DIY delight has begun self-distributing to North American theaters following a long tour on the regional festival circuit. It’s sure to develop a significant cult following with its unique mix of silent-era slapstick, animation elements, theme-park-style critter costumes, and general air of inspired absurdity.

When we recently compiled our list of science fiction movies based on true stories, one film that didn’t make the list was Christopher Nolan‘s Oppenheimer. After all, the technology behind the nuclear bomb can no longer be said to be undiscovered, sadly. Nonetheless, Oppenheimer remains the archetypal science fiction story—one about a mad scientist who devises a new machine that changes the world through terrible unforeseen consequences. He is an an American Prometheus, yes, but also a regular Yankee Frankenstein. More than that though, by ushering in the nuclear age, Oppenheimer may have lit the fuse on the genre of cinematic science fiction.
It is hardly a new observation, but walk into any cinema in the 1950s and you will find no shortage of creatures, monsters, or occasionally people grown to giant size by the mysterious power of radiation. You don’t need to look too closely...

When Paul Thomas Anderson went against the industry grain and cast Adam Sandler as the lead in his fourth feature, "Punch Drunk Love," many people in Hollywood felt the brashly talented filmmaker's ego had inflated to Welles-ian proportions. After the dazzling excess of "Magnolia" (which was more divisive at the time than it is now), there was a sense that he was provoking for provocation's sake. Outside of Steven Seagal, it's possible there wasn't a more critically loathed star in America — and it wasn't just the movies they hated. They detested him. They considered him a charisma vacuum who needed someone as irresistibly lovable as Drew Barrymore to render his presence in a film tolerable.
Anderson shattered these misconceptions. Though Sandler didn't dive headlong into dramas after "Punch Drunk Love," he'd take on a non-comedic part every few years and remind us of his untapped potential — which he fully realized...

As for 2024, no plot details are currently available, other than it’s expected to begin following the conclusion of the flagship Yellowstone series. According to Variety, the contemporary spinoff will feature new cast members and locations, with crossover characters mixed in as well. As previously reported, Matthew McConaughey is set to saddle up for this modern-day rodeo.

Netflix’s All the Light We Cannot See is finally here, and it’s unfortunate that we have to say it’s quite a disappointment. Still, there are some good things about the series that drag us towards it, like the actors who play the important characters that drive this simple story forward through a non-linear lens. Amongst them all, the first episode is where the most happens, and it does feel a little bit all over the place because it takes quite a bit of time to set things into motion—way too much time for a series with only 4 episodes. The story begins in Nazi-occupied St. Malo. In August 1944, the Americans are dropping bombs on the little seaside town, and Marie is sending a message to her dear Papa and Uncle Etienne. She’s been alone for a very long time, and she’s requesting that they return home to her.

“All the Light We Cannot See” is not, in the strictest sense, a comfort watch. Like the Pulitzer Prize-winning Anthony Doerr novel on which it’s based, the four-episode limited series takes place in a walled city under siege by a bombing campaign, its trapped civilians unable to evacuate — hardly a relaxing break from today’s headlines. But the Netflix show is, in a way, a return to simpler times.
This particular walled city is located in Nazi-occupied France, on the verge of American liberation in August 1944. As written, “All the Light We Cannot See” is already set amid a conflict that’s far closer to good versus evil than most armed struggles. As adapted by screenwriter Steven Knight (“Peaky Blinders”) and director Shawn Levy, the series leans into sentiment and moral simplicity. Knight and Levy aim for an uplifting, inspirational tale of connection that transcends division, distance and prejudice,...

Aria Mia Loberti, the breakout star of Shawn Levy’s Netflix limited series “All the Light We Cannot See,” has narrated a new audio edition of Jules Verne’s classic novel “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.”
Loberti, a writer, human rights advocate and Fulbright Scholarship recipient, made her acting debut in “All the Light We Cannot See,” an adaptation of Anthony Doerr’s beloved Pulitzer Prize-winning novel which will premiere on Netflix Thursday. In the show, Loberti plays Marie-Laure, a courageous blind teenager living in Nazi-occupied France during WWII. As an act of resilience, Marie-Laure Leblanc defies a Nazi ban on radio broadcasts and reads passages from “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea” over the radio airwaves every night.
Loberti says she was captivated by the positioning of Verne’s classic novel within Doerr’s book and became interested in recording a full length audiobook of “Twenty Thousand Leagues...

AMC has saved the Captain Nemo series Nautilus after it was scrapped by Disney+ earlier this summer. Inspired by Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, the live-action Captain Nemo origin story will premiere on AMC and AMC+ in 2024. AMC announced on Monday, October 30 that it licensed the U.S. and Canadian linear and streaming rights to Nautilus, a 10-episode live-action series inspired by Jules Verne’s beloved Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, from Disney Entertainment. An exact release date for its AMC and AMC+ 2024 debut will be announced at a later time. The prequel series, which is being called an “epic adventure,” filmed in Australia in 2022 and had already wrapped production when Disney decided not to move forward with it in August 2023 during a period of cost-cutting at the studio. The Spiderwick Chronicles suffered the same fate, but it, too, was saved by The Roku Channel in early October.

A retelling of the story of Captain Nemo is on the move — and not just under the ocean.
AMC Networks has grabbed linear and streaming rights to Nautilus — a reimagining of Jules Verne’s classic novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea — in the United States and Canada. The series, which hails from British companies Moonriver TV and All3Media-owned Seven Stories, was initially set for Disney+, which picked it up to series in August 2021. After scrapping the show earlier this year as part of a content write-down, however, Disney Entertainment has licensed Nautilus to AMC and its sibling streamer AMC+, which plan to air the series in 2024.
“Nautilus is a big, sweeping drama that is sure to appeal to fans of our Anne Rice Immortal Universe and other buzzy and fan-forward series like Orphan Black: Echoes,” said Ben Davis, executive vp original programming at AMC Networks and AMC Studios.

Spoilers for "The Fall of the House of Usher" follow.
As horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan has gone from production to production, he's assembled a wholesale acting troupe along the way. Kate Siegel (his wife), Henry Thomas, Carla Gugino, Bruce Greenwood, Carl Lumbly, Michael Trucco, Rahul Kohli, Annabeth Gish — they're all in Flanagan's latest, "The Fall of the House of Usher," and if you look back through his filmography, you'll recognize their faces somewhere.
That said, Flanagan always includes a few actors who are new to him, and "House of Usher" is no different. One of those new faces is one that's otherwise eminently familiar: Mark Hamill. Like the rest of the main cast, Hamill's part is named after an Edgar Allan Poe character. In his case, the eponymous protagonist of "The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket."

Special effects artists are often the unsung heroes of horror films. Who is Pennywise without his startling clown makeup (above)? Who is M3gan without her hauntingly digitized face? Would King Kong and the silver screen's collection of other creatures and monsters even be remotely frightening without the technical prowess of the filmmakers behind their creation? We may not tangibly identify these artists' work in the moment as we watch a horror movie, but we certainly feel it.
On paper, many horror films' storylines don't seem scary at all; some even appear to be laughably unrealistic. Through special effects — practical mechanics, animation, makeup, puppetry, stunts, clever set-design tricks, and the like — artists can elevate even the most silly concepts into something macabre. They elicit the frights we love these movies for. Without them, such films appear quite different indeed. Here are what a few iconic horror films look like without special effects,...

David Fincher hasn’t worked on a blockbuster franchise since making his infamous directorial debut on “Alien 3” — a film that he has since disavowed due to what he saw as excessive studio interference — but he has flirted with taking on big properties on multiple occasions. He spent years developing an adaptation of Jules Verne’s “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” for Disney with the intention of casting Brad Pitt. And more recently, he was briefly attached to direct Pitt in a “World War Z” sequel.

In an era when many superhero films have adapted an unflattering, desaturated visual style in the name of realism, "Aquaman" is a balm for the eyes. The James Wan-directed DC Comics flick is full of eye-popping colors and imagery reminiscent of the splash pages you find in actual comic books. There are also nods aplenty to classic sci-fi and adventure stories, from the globe-trotting tomb-raiding of the Indiana Jones films to the fantastical prehistoric setting of Arthur Conan Doyle's "The Lost World." So it should come as no surprise that Wan has taken a similar approach to crafting a unique look for his sequel, "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom."

During one of the many flashbacks in “All the Light We Cannot See,” Marie-Laure (Aria Mia Loberti) sits with her great-uncle, Etienne (Hugh Laurie), as the aging Frenchman casts a line into the English Channel. Their fishing expedition is both a ploy and, well, a fishing expedition: They’re trawling for intelligence, not dinner, as Etienne describes the new boats docked nearby to his blind grandniece, who dutifully writes down whatever she’s told. Later, their reports will be shared with the Allies over the radio, but only if their cover, the fishing pole, masks their more critical tool: the typewriter. Nazi troops have taken over the small French town of Saint-Malo, and a cadre of Germans soon stumble upon their two-person operation. As an inquisitive officer demands answers from Marie, Etienne reaches into his tackle box for a makeshift weapon. If they don’t buy her story, he knows what must be done.

The post-9/11 world was rough on "Star Trek." The not-super-popular "Star Trek: Enterprise" debuted on September 26, 2001, and the world wasn't in the mood. The U.S. president at the time, George W. Bush, began to affect violent, revenge-forward rhetoric, and many U.S. citizens were in a bitter, wounded mindset. While some may say that the utopian future of "Trek" was needed at that time, one can see how its idealism felt out of place. "Star Trek" would have us reaching out to our enemies and solving problems through diplomacy. That suggested course of action didn't sit well with a nation itching to enact justice. It's no wonder films like "The Avengers" took off in the post-9/11 milieu; the Avengers avenge the destruction of our cities. Diplomacy was out, freelance super-powered military mercs were in.
So when "Enterprise" was canceled in 2005 after four seasons, it seemed that "Star Trek" was at an end.

Exclusive: Nautilus, the UK live-action Captain Nemo series commissioned by Disney+ two years ago, is no longer headed to the streamer, Deadline has learned.
The decision is part of Disney’s streaming content removal plan unveiled in May, for which the company is taking an impairment charge of approximately $1.5 billion-$1.8 billion.
