After the disappointing “Masquerade 1966,” Feud needs to get back on track. With another time jump, this time to the aftermath of the Esquire article, Capote finds himself at odds with his Swans again. Throughout “It’s Impossible,” director Gus Van Sant tries to elevate the periphery characters. In 2006, a movie came out starring Daniel Craig, Sandra Bullock, Sigourney Weaver, Jeff Daniels, Hope Davis, Isabella Rossellini, Peter Bogdanovich, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Toby Jones. That’s a murderer’s row of talent bringing to life writer/director Douglas McGrath’s script — and very few people paid it much mind. But “Infamous” was a victim of bad timing, not bad filmmaking.
One can’t blame audiences for greeting it with a collective shrug. McGrath’s movie tackled the exact same topic as the previous year’s “Capote” (the movie that earned Philip Seymour Hoffman his first and only Oscar): Truman Capote’s time spent researching and writing his true-crime classic “In Cold Blood.” After the buzzy release of “Capote” and months spent in awards season campaigning mode, no one was ready to revisit the subject.
What a shame, because “Infamous” restores much of what was missing from Bennett Miller...

Although Feud: Capote vs. The Swans is only the second installment of Ryan Murphy’s Feud franchise — Bette and Joan aired way back in 2017 — the anthology’s core seems clear enough. To qualify as a Feud season, the focus must be on a rivalry of little to no cosmic importance that’s somehow integral to the very essence of the people involved. It must exist as nothing and everything all at once.
Capote vs. The Swans creator Jon Robin Baitz understands the general assignment. In focusing on the society kerfuffle between Truman Capote and some of the most powerful women of New York’s upper crust, Baitz has a clash that’s entirely inconsequential and yet cataclysmic within its milieu. Unfortunately, a jumbled approach to time and a limited understanding of character make it a story without momentum.

Something Wicked this way comes, again.
Broadway in Hollywood said today that the Tony-winning smash Broadway musical will return to the Pantages Theatre next year, with its limited engagement starting in December 2024. The organization usually reveals the Hollywood Boulevard venue’s entire season every February, but it got a broom-flying start on 2024-25.
The show is based on Gregory Maguire 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, which followed up L. Frank Baum’s 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and its classic 1939 MGM film. Featuring songs including “Defying Gravity,” “Popular” and “For Good,” it looks at what happened in the Land of Oz from a different angle. Long before Dorothy arrives, there is another young woman born with emerald-green skin who is smart, fiery, misunderstood and possessing an extraordinary talent. When she meets a bubbly blonde who is exceptionally popular, their initial rivalry...

Steven Pasquale and Jeremy Shamos started working on the new Stephen Sondheim musical, Here We Are, seven years ago, while others, like Denis O’Hare, were asked to join the project last summer.
But for everyone now starring in the show, which opened Off-Broadway at The Shed on Oct. 22, joining the project was an immediate yes, largely due to the novelty of being in a new Sondheim piece, which ended up being the composer’s first new show in decades, as well as his last.
“I know all [his] shows. I know the music. I didn’t even have to read it. I said yes before I read it,” said Bobby Cannavale, who is part of the show’s ensemble cast, which also includes David Hyde Pierce, Micaela Diamond and Rachel Bay Jones.

In the penultimate song in Stephen Sondheim’s musical “Sunday in the Park with George,” Dot implores the artist George to “give us more to see.” The late maestro has done so himself one last time with the world premiere of his final musical, “Here We Are,” which opened Off-Broadway at The Shed on Oct. 22. Written with dramatist David Ives, the musical takes inspiration from two Luis Buñuel films – “The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie” and “The Exterminating Angel” – that it marries with one set of characters.
Tony Award-winner Joe Mantello played an integral role in the show’s development and directs its first production. He has assembled an unrivaled ensemble to take on the roles of the unimaginably affluent characters who spend the first act trying to find a restaurant in which to have brunch, and who in the second act find themselves unable to leave after their meal.

“Sometimes people leave you halfway through the wood,” Cinderella sings in “No One Is Alone,” Stephen Sondheim’s clear-eyed reassurance of support and survival at the end of Into the Woods. Sondheim himself, who passed away in November 2021, left artistic companions, including book writer David Ives and director Joe Mantello, halfway through a wood they were constructing together: the musical Here We Are, now playing off-Broadway at the Shed’s Griffin Theater. With his final offering, Sondheim sends one last jolt of structural inventiveness coursing through the veins of the musical theater form. Here We Are may not operate on the grand scale of Sweeney Todd or Into the Woods or Follies, but it is, to quote the composer-lyricist, small and funny and fine.
Here We Are adapts two films by Luis Buñuel. The first act riffs on 1972’s The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie. Ives borrows the basic premise...

All Arts’ upcoming non-fiction feature “Manhattan Theatre Club, a Home for Artists” will explore the 50-year history of one of the most impactful off-Broadway theaters in New York. Helmed by the club’s very own Lynne Meadow and Barry Grove, the film stitches together archival footage and photos and interviews with stars like Laura Linney, Edie Falco, Sam Waterston and Sarah Jessica Parker.
“Through their stewardship of Manhattan Theatre Club, Lynne Meadow and Barry Grove have left an indelible mark on the theatrical landscape for decades to come,” said Joe Harrell, executive producer of All Arts, a Wnet group streaming platform and broadcast channel based in New York. “Their story champions the vital role of nonprofit theaters in allowing artists to take risks, explore innovative ideas and challenge conventions.”
The Manhattan Theatre Club was founded in 1970 at Stage 73 but took off under the guidance of Meadow as artistic director and Grove as executive producer.
