What's New in January 2023

January 19, 2023

In this update, Grove Art publishes 13 new and 9 revised articles, as well as 763 emendations as part of our regular corrections process. New articles in Grove Art come from our ongoing project on African American and Black artists supervised by Dr. Steven Nelson, with new entries on Frank Bowling, Julian Hudson, and Oliver Jackson. Other new scholarship includes a discussion of Decolonization and Art and updates to Grove’s surveys of art in Mexico and Peru.

Updated entries in Benezit cover important women artists including Polish filmmaker Ewa Partum and American artist Senga Nengudi, whose sculptural installations utilize dance, movement, and unconventional materials like pantyhose, demonstrating her gift to “prevail with what is at hand” in the creation of works exploring lived experience or the body’s changes with pregnancy and time.
