My mission to develop all-natural, lowfat dog treats began in 2001 when my beloved Lab, Aztec, became a bit pudgy. I was in search of healthy lowfat products, and Aztec was in search of treats with taste. We were both disappointed. "Healthy" treats loaded with artificial preservatives seemed like an oxymoron to me; and Aztec liked them about as much as flavored cardboard. My search turned into research that then turned into ideas--I knew I could bake something better. And so Barks Doggie Bakery was born. We aim to produce treats that are all-natural, fun, unique, and most importantly, great tasting!
With the help of my father, a veterinarian for over 35 years, I developed unique recipes based on healthy vegetables and tasty treats such as: Peanut Butter Bones with all-natural peanut butter and soy, Apple Ginger Muffins with real apples and ginger, and Molasses Oat Hearts with black strap molasses and flax seed. Each recipe goes through rigorous taste tests with Aztec and his friends.
Today Barks Doggie Bakery continues to grow and develop more recipes. And I'm happy to report that Aztec, the Official Taste Taster of Barks Doggie Bakery, has slimmed down and is maintaining his weight at 95 pounds!!
